HAVANA,what is wrong with you man you caught a sailfish and took a picture of it your out of control. I can’t believe you did that dude and then you got a bunch of 15year old guy’s on the boat smoking camel’s and drinking beer.

Funny how nobody has any respect for the hog that gave his life for the 4lbs. of smoked Boston Butts that HAVANA consumed with his Budlight:smiley:

Ya seriously, don’t worry about breaking the rules…like Fred Rodgers said “you are special”…the rules do not apply to you…just everyone else…

Oh ya, and anyone who says we should try to conserve and respect our respurces is a tree hugging liberal who masterbates to pictures of Bill Clinton (1st term) …

This is not a chawade…

We need total concentwation…

So far these are hands down my two favorite quotes of this thread.

Where is all of this “Don’t take the sails out of the water” crap coming from lately. Sounds like a bunch of Tred Barta’s saying, “Yeah I know I killed hundreds of (pick a fish or mammal) but I don’t want anyone else to ever do it again”. I have caught dozens of sails, had a picture with 2 of them and I feel 100% that all lived to be caught another day. In Guatemala there are upwards of 200 sails caught in a day, dozens of pictures and I have never seen or heard of one dying…not one. I am sure some have but with that many being caught and photographed the ocean would be littered with dead sails if they were harmed by an in boat picure. I strongly support in water pictures, but am really tired of anyone posting a picture being lambasted for putting up a good report and picture.

Good report and great picture.

sharks do an outstanding job keeping our oceans clean, so please do not kill sharks

one time we lost a dolphin after we gaffed and hitted it’s head with the billy bat, we tougth it will show up around the boat, but never made it back, after few minutes decided to resume trolling, so I’m pretty sure the dolphin was not in critical codition and survived…

This is stupid, first bill for the boat if it’s a sail drag it in for the picture, second and up, no way and Havana knows that. Lay off people, Havana is good people and is highly concerned about our fishery, and almost certainly has been fishing longer than you!

Brilliant!!!

So now you suggest having the most inexperienced crews/anglers doing the most dangerous tasks.

Awesome. How ‘bout this? If your first trip ever then it’s OK to take your 17’ Whaler to the Georgetown Hole in 25kt winds…but second trip and up then stay home and wait for better weather.

These fish are not endangered, sure some most likely die but I don’t think from being hauled topside for a 30 to 90 second picture.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>

More brilliance. Why don’t your run uphill with a 50lb backpack on for 10-15 minutes then let us hold your head underwater for 30 to 90 seconds and then see if you can out run a lion. Or see if you can catch a chicken or something else to eat.

Mother nature is not kind. The idea of releasing the fish is to allow it the best chance to survive. Otherwise, kill it and eat it.

I will assume we are all fishermen here and if you moan about a sailfish picture the real tree huggers might just quote you on it and be taking a picture of you next time you net some menhaden and grind them up for chum.

Again. The concept here is the “intent”.

If the “intention” is to release the fish so it can live and reproduce, then why not give it the best opportunity to do so?

I agree with Dock Rocker, MURDERER! Jeez, catch the fish, pull the fish in the boat, and then take the fish home and eat it–Just dont post the picture here." “RISE KILL AND EAT” or starve to death, the choice is yours.

Oh yeah, I forgot, Havana is green, he bleeds it.

Well HAVANNA that pretty much settles it. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to run up hill with a backpack or chase a chicken so I guess from now on you’ll need to eat the sailfish.

so the guy who posts that he keeps the fish gets 2 responses. The guy who releases the fish gets 2 pages.

based on Sharkseeker’s post: searched the NMFS site.

BILLFISH CATCH AND RELEASE
FISHERY MANAGEMENT
PROGRAM
NMFS encourages catch and release of Atlantic
billfish, and the use of circle hooks to
maximize post-release survival. A fish that is
not retained must be released by in a manner
that will maximize its survival by cutting the
line or using a dehooking device, and without
removing the from the water.

just to clear up any misunderstandings that have been drug out from any minuscule detail of the original post, I the 17 year old did not consume any beer or camel lights. there were 4 other guys on board, each well over 21 years. i am not sure where this assumption came from, but hopefully this will shed some light. also please don’t comment on any misspelled words i may have let slip, for some of you guys that go through each post with a fine tooth comb.

earlytimes - thanks for the laugh. do a little research on C&R mortality rates (for any species). or better yet, think about it for a moment. 100% certain you are a googan w/ comments like that. one of the most amazing / disheartening sights you can see offshore is a grown shark eating a sailfish. guess they don’t agree that they are poor tablefare unless smoked.

ocd folks - don’t get worked up by any of the comments. but, in all seriousness, if you are going to boat the fish, tell the angler to look at the camera! greenhorn mistake!

to the conservation minded, buy an olympus 770sw. i just ordered one from amazon. this pic is from a disposable waterproof one, so the olympus should do even better

In all due respect that picture suks! Know reference how big, who caught it, what bait, rod, etc. I am not ribbing you but to all that want a pic only from the water similar to yours it just does not seem to work. I think I speak for most (not all) but a first sail is a pretty big achievement. Most anglers have dumbed a pretty good bit of $$$ and time into fishing by this point. Fortunately most off our coast are bringing the fish in the boat for a pic then releasing it and not bringing it home to dry out at the dock. Not sure what percent of boated/released fish make it but I am 100% confident 0% that are hung on the dock do. It is a trophy enjoy the moment and enjoy releasing the fish so that others may have a similar opportunity.
Nice sail, nice pic, great trophy, from this point on hug a tree before leaving the dock and only use 80 wides or greater and circle hooks for sails so they don’t have to climb anymore hills with back packs on… or something.:smiley:

scout - while i don’t agree that the pic sux, it isn’t perfect, but it is different and when you have caught enough billfish that you can’t remember every single one, one that was photographed by jumping in and swiming still stands out in your mind. to that point, i probably have 75+ pictures of me w/ billfish around my house and that one gets the most comments, with the only exceptions being the mounted one on the wall and the fish we killed at the big rock. a better picture would have the angler in it and would be taken from several feet away to give more perspective. in my opinioin, that woudl be a better pic than any other for your first. that fish in the photo i posted is actually a white, but, you are correct in that is near impossible to discern from the photo.

and releasing a fish always does give them a chance, there has been at least one marlin that i know of recaptured w/ “released dead” written on the tag card…

Actually sails are pretty easy to catch, whats the big deal? Sailfish, for the most part, are kingfish with a bill and a large dorsal. How often do you hear about folks catching a blue or white around here while livebaiting in 60’?

I bet the vast majority of rec boats in charleston will catch more sails this year than yft’s.

Taylor great fish. Congratulations on the first sail. I know you are hitting hitting the inshore deal hard too. Call when you’re in HHI.
