If you want to keep a legal billfish, fine. This whole thread has been about the law pertaining to boating a billfish for a pic, and then returning it to the water.
It is clear that it is against the law. The law does not say that if it is your first billfish, then it is OK.

It is not complaining, it is the law.

As far as what Scoutin posted earlier I don’t think the law is so clear, as you claim it to be. Therefore, I don’t really see your point (whether it’s regarding the “circle hook rule” or not). As far as his conversation with “Sandra” (who voices MUCH aforementioned law) is concerned, “It is the fisherman’s obligation to release the fish with as little stress as possible. This includes leaving it in the water. Technically it is NOT against the law to boat the fish.”

Now…assuming “Sandra” is correct, read the first word of the last sentence and then put a special emphasis on “NOT” and it might hammer out to you why the law apparently is not so clear.

P.S. Scoutin, not to give you too much credit b/c your last post was a painful, seemingly adderal-induced experience. Thanks, and good night.

I received 2 responses from NOAA. Contacts are Greg Fairclouh and Michael Bailey. There numbers are on page 3 of this post. They both went through the trouble to get this information to me, & I am sure they would do the same for you. The law/rule/regs are there in black & white. Who cares if it is enforced or not. It is the rule, period.

Scoutin - That little scenario about the sailfish was retarded. If your intent is to release the fish (regardless of size), dont take it out of the water. If you are gonna kill it, then do it, and get all the pictures you want.

People need to realize that what you do on the water is between you and your own conscience. Just be aware of the rules & regs first, then if you still post your picture you either dont care about the fish, or you are ignorant to the NMFS regulation.

I dont know who Sandra is but Greg Fairclough and Michael Bailey are the two dudes pretty much running the show over there, so maybe I would give them a buzz, if you are serious about this. Nice guys and very easy to talk to.

I know its like 3am, but I just got to Vegas and my brain is goo. Ill keep you guys updated on any cool sh*t I see at ICAST.

Yes, that was my intention, I believe this so called “law” to be retarded.
This is bigger than than keeping or releasing a bill fish this is bad! I am all about catch and release of bills but I have know problems with some guy taking his first fish our of the water for a pic then putting it back. Years ago the fish would have been kept period. Now a large majority are released. If this so called “law” starts getting enforced then all of these now pics will be dried out sail fish on the docks.

Think about it this way, if these “experts” making these laws know so much out the fishery that they have determined it to greatly decrease a fishes chance of survival to be brought out of the water and they are truly concerned with a diminishing sailfish population then why not put a limit on the fish?? Seems to contradict itself. As posted earlier only take the fish out that are of legal length makes since to me. Fish harmed in the boating, he dies, just like you keeping him.
Where will the line be drawn? Soon we will not be able to take any fish our of the water. Your kids will have to bream fish with circle hooks and cut the line when their cork goes under.

Again RUNNOFT this is not against you, you are stating what you have been told, I am just reluctant to agree with it. The document makes much more since to me with the “encourage” clause. Basically you can keep a bill if you want but we encourage you release them and this is how.

I will keep digging today:wink:

Havana, met you at the DI work racks the day before your offshore expierience. Tried you on the radio. We went strait out dropped at 180 ish. I was riding high after killing the dolphin and landing some small tuna but was put in my place with quickness. Took a friend from canada and would have been better of at Bees Ferry landfill. 5 cudas, 2 kings and 170 gallomns later we I tucked my tail and headed home. We were close too, nice sail BTW and as much as I hate to admit it My first striped marlim went to the smoaker and fed my buddies and some mexicans in Cabo. But in reality hose had the small bat upside his head as soon as he got boatside. If any one needs their boat detailed let me know…got tons of stellar referances.

I’d venture to say that just about everyone who has caught a sailfish has pulled them out of the water for a photo opp at one time or another. That’s including those who are pointing fingers here…
They caught a fish, took a picture, and released it. No federal laws were broken, there is no need for a jury trial, and the point has been made.

I’d still like to know what a mora mora is, tho…

Sorry for the mispelling I meant to say Mola-Mola.

I got ya Clay. Tried calling you as well. Talked to several boats that day. I was on 65 and 68. Maybe need to get your radio checked. I passed you in the harbor coming in and saw your angle coming home and you were north a ways from me. Got a couple jobs next week at DIM maybe see you there.

Scott,
I don’t think I will be able to make it…again. My wife is having an injection into her SI joint tomorrow at 4:15, and I don’t know how she will be feeling afterward. Thursdays just don’t seem to work very well for me.
Shoot me a PM with your mobile #. I’ll give you a call either way.

Fishing is a need

Nice going on your sail. I do not blame you for taking a picture because it was your first. The blood, however, is not from the hook- hooks don’t do that. The blood is from the fact that you have broken the fish’s bill at the base- you can tell in the picture, and, I digress, I know from experience…

Yes you are correct. The tip of the bill is broken. However, the assumption on your part saying “I” broke it is incorrect. That was the first thing I saw when boat side. Which I thoought was strange. It must have broke during the fight. Lets now have a discussion about the correct way to fight a sail so its bill does not get broken. If no solution can come of this then we must all cut our line as soon as we know a sailfish is on.

So, maybe the fish died, he will provide food for another.

Point out the mistake and lets all learn from it. Get off their backs!!

I just wish that this topic would end up like that sailfish… Belly up and floating off in the current so we never have to see it again…

Shouldn't you be studying those numbers I gave you for the ARS.

Shhhh... If porpoise won finds out that I am getting "help" from another charter captain, he will call off the whole thing.

I should read these forums more often and stay caught up…reading five pages of this at one sitting is like going to a funeral…sheesh
