off shore fishing

just wondering if anyone is willing to go off shore around the snagged shrimp nets for Gray trout? Generally 1-2 miles off shore.

Not sure, need to talk to some of the shrimp boat captains to find out where there nets have gotten snagged. Going out isn’t to much as as a problem as coming in. I’m OK with 1-3 ft surf coming in with my 160. Anything over that, this time of year? Don’t know. Now that I’ve got a 160 and not a 140…well the 140 coming in backwards even in 4-5ft. surf…no problem…The 160…I’m sure it will be harder to handle. If we can put in, in one of the Inlets maybe that may be the way…? I’ve done a bit of trolling off shore during the summer but not during the winter. I do known if fishing with a gotcha gig and a strip of mullet(heavy gig to get to the bottom) you should be able to catch some Gray Trout…? The more research we can do, I guess the better I’ll odds will be…? Gray’s in the winter…Kings in the Summer?

If anyone can talk and find out the gps coordinates of any of the nets on the north end of Charleston, I’ll do what I can do on the south end.

Murray, I’m going to guess its not something you can plan on, Its going to be something your going to have to watch the the weather.
 After going through the surf I would guess you would want the sun to warm you up as soon as possible. Its generally a wet ride

how did you do ?

how was the wind… ? bet it blew.

So you really want to know how my day went? Last weekend all fish(reds, trout, big blues and flounder)where caught on mud’s, so that’s how I fished today. Big difference though. Last weekend I stayed dry. Today the wind was BLOWING! Trolled the the creek, fished the surf some and then came back in. Got to a sharp turn and looked behind me to make sure my lines didn’t cross…So how do say this,…my yak flipped. The anchor grabbed the bottom, my paddle was floating away, out of three rods I lost a pen 4400, spent 3 quarters of a hour in the water and still had 1 hour to paddle to my $%# truck! Oh did I forget to tell you I didn’t catch any #&%*& Fish. Plus my phone & camera are now DEAD.

I guess if that’s the worst thing to happen to me today…then that’s ok.

Eric, If your fishing tomorrow, I’m going to try to be out there early?

thanks Mud! that made my day… sorry to get such a good laugh out of your misfortune.

I think I saw somewhere that if you put your phone and camera in a container with rice it will draw out the moisture.

murray, I think you saw that at Flows Diner, in the salt shaker.
You know what would of been the best thing to of done…TO HAVE HAD IN MY WATER PROOF BOX THAT WAS IN MY TACKLE BAG!
I think its this boat, That’s two phones in two months.
I want my 140 back.

Scott, glad to give you a laugh, I’ll see what I can do for ya today. Got up earlier to go fishin, all that swimming, 47 years of age…I’m a soar puppy. Looks like it will be later then I thought.

Hey Mud…were you wearing waders when you went overboard ? … did that affect your swim ?

come on Mud …you gotta give your boat a break…you know she hears all this negativity…BE POSITIVE…and she will treat you right !! …ok…now I’m off to smoke another one !!

sorry murray(and my 160) I like the 140 better! look at the stern on the tarpons, the 140 flairs out and has a strong edge, the 160 doesn’t. The 160 on the stern I think is to narrow. That may help in speed, but if speed is what I want then I should get a Hell’s Bay Flats boat!:sunglasses:

Mud what do you normally catch when you troll offshore?

point noted…what about the waders…were you wearing them and do you have any tips in that area ?

Hadn’t caught much out front. Mainly small blues. Most of my trips where spent on learning on how to handle my boat in the surf and the wind. When its warmer, I don’t see why we wouldn’t be able to get in to some Spanish? When I got my 140 a couple of years ago, I did get dragged a time or two in front of Bird Key…Never saw the fish, but it was fun! I was wanting to go out this fall and try for the trout…after my dip in the water Saturday, It looks like I need to get more comfortable with my 160.

Norm, the waders filled up with water, didn’t seem to make much of a difference. I would think if you fell while in a river or surf fishing, that’s when waders could be a problem? Don’t know and hope I never find out!
