for the past year or so, we have only taken pctures jn the water. According to NMFS you cannot take a billfish out of the water for a picture. I was not aware of that law until recntly. By the way, I haven't killed a sailfish in years,
Where is this?
If it is true, I will never take another one out of the water. I’ve been on several charters over the last ten years where we’ve pulled sails out for pictures. Don’t you think if it were against the law, the charter captains would know about it?
Jerms,
I would eat the AJ on the grill w seasonings and basted with oil on cooking side.
FYI…that AJ is what we call a Bar Jack…on the books they are called a lesser amber jack. If he was a AJ, as we all think of, he would be called a greater amber jack and the size limit is 28" full length. That fish in the picture looks a little less than 28". It might help to call them bar jacks so nobody gets confused and gives you guys unnesscary feed back. There is no size limit on the bar jack.
Also, bar jacks eat way better than an AJ. The meat is whiter and not as fishy.
There are so many species and varations it still gives me a hard time.
Try the yellow mouth versus scamp. Thank goodness the regs are the same. But don’t get them confused with the yellowfin(grouper) or yellow edge!
That fish is not a bar jack - it’s an Almaco jack. The best guide book is “Pettersons field guide to atlantic coast fishes” About 20 bucks at Books A million. Most jacks make good crab bait.

I just got off the phone with the NMFS in Maryland. It is definitely against the law to boat sailfish for pictures if you intend to release them. Call for yourself 1-301-713-2347. I am waiting on a call from the southeastern director of recreational fisheries for more details.
Supposedly this law is fairly new, which is probably why most charter boats don’t know about it. When I get details I will let everyone know.
In that case, we were going to eat it, but changed our minds.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling?
I don’t think it works like that. Again, NMFS waters extend 200 miles out, and enforcement is probably a bit difficult, but Internet fishing reports are pretty much admissions of guilt. I have done the same thing recently, I just don’t want to end up paying a $10,000 fine because some Federal agent was having a bad day and saw my sail on the web, you know?
Sailfish…I guess you got 2 pictures that you need to ax now, the sailfish pic and the undersized scamp pic…
■■■■…you thought you were just going out fishing and next thing you know you’ve broken laws subject to penalties…and you’ve supplied the evidence yourself…ouch

are you John from zman fishing products?
Koooray
No, but I work closely with John Wauhop, Mike Shelton, Paul Harris, and Jonathan Zucker, all great guys and amazing fisherman. We have been doing the final stages of the R&D process for the offshore products. We are headed to ICAST in Vegas in about a month, and let me tell you these guys have some surprises for everyone. Let me know if you need me to relay any messages.

PS I picked up the new artificial ballyhoo yesterday, rumor has it the other test boat in Hatteras was outcatching the real baits with the artificial like 8 to 1. The thing looks great and all their plastics swim amazingly. Can’t wait to get back on the water to give it a go.

For all the critics and fish estimation experts that have negative ■■■■■■■■]:
We have this handy item taped to the boat called a fish ruler which states on it what the species size regs are. Maybe we should start taking pics with them on it for the skeptics. I can verify every fish kept was over 20" , we did however throw back a few that were right at 19.75-20", if there is any doubt about size we return them to Davey Jones. The smallest we kept was 22". Not quite sure what size the planks at that dock were but maybe one day I’ll measure them for the concerned individuals who would like to know (with measurement photos of course).
I never allow undersize fish on my boat and 23Sailfish believes in this policy also. Its just not worth the fine or the harm to the fish population.
All in all it was a great day and I want to thank 23Sailfish for throwing the invite.

Jerms try putting olive oil on both side a sprinkle Cavender’s greek seasoning on it and pan sear it in vegetable oil. I think AJ is very good as long as all the red meat is taken out. I have also wrapped it in bacon (put whatever seasoning you like on it) and melted some monteray jack cheese on it and it was good that way. You can also pecan encrust it and bake it. Rub a little dijon mustard on the ouside and coat with bread crumbs and chopped pecans, very good.
