We have this handy item taped to the boat called a fish ruler which states on it what the species size regs are. Maybe we should start taking pics with them on it for the skeptics. I can verify every fish kept was over 20" , we did however throw back a few that were right at 19.75-20", if there is any doubt about size we return them to Davey Jones. The smallest we kept was 22". Not quite sure what size the planks at that dock were but maybe one day I’ll measure them for the concerned individuals who would like to know (with measurement photos of course).
I never allow undersize fish on my boat and 23Sailfish believes in this policy also. Its just not worth the fine or the harm to the fish population.
All in all it was a great day and I want to thank 23Sailfish for throwing the invite.

I don’t think it works like that. Again, NMFS waters extend 200 miles out, and enforcement is probably a bit difficult, but Internet fishing reports are pretty much admissions of guilt. I have done the same thing recently, I just don’t want to end up paying a $10,000 fine because some Federal agent was having a bad day and saw my sail on the web, you know?

In that case, I guess that you have already reported your landing of the sail to NMFS, as required by law, within 24 hours.

NMFS encourages catch and release of

This is a jackass thing to say. Since when is it Netgirl’s responsibility to "show [you] in writing? If I were her, I wouldn’t show you **** and let you break the law. Do whatever the **** you want. She was obviously pointing you in the right direction whether you like it or not. And when you get a ticket for it, please tell them that Netgirl failed to show you the law in writing.

Same thing with the taking it out of the water before you release it. Show it to me or provide the link and I will most certainly abide by any state or federal law reguarding this. A phone call to someone at NMFS is not enough. If it is a law, there should be a publicly available document stating it and its provisions.

This one always works in court… “Sorry judge people tried to tell me it was illegal, but they failed to show me the documentation and I was too lazy to check into it on my own!” Just stick with that story and you will be OKAY!!!

There, I think all my bases are covered now.

I can’t wait to catch one of my own and take pics of it laying on the tailgate of my truck and see how many more people will get all wadded up about a silly fish.

Maybe a video of a well-placed gaff shot.

Or maybe you can admit that you learned something on this thread and keep those thoughts in that big head of yours. I'll be the first to admit too, that I did not know it was illegal to remove them from the water. Now that I know that, I am not going slap around the people that let me know.

First of all, thank you for showing me this information. Without you, I would not have known it. You sir are a fine american for helping out those without the knowledge. The original post from netgirl, I misunderstood. I thought she was saying that every catch and release had to be called in. I apologize for my misunderstanding. I was not demanding information from anyone; I just wanted to know where they got their information. That’s all. We have never had to call NMFS because we have never kept a billfish. Never even thought about it actually. Let it be known from this point forward to everyone on CF that CarlaDee and SkinneJ are fishing gods and shouldn’t be screwed with. They know all and see all and should not be questioned again. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways guys. Sar

On a more serious note, now that I know it is not allowed, I will refrain from removing any billfish from the water from now on and suggest that everyone here who is lucky enough to catch one of these magnificant creatures do the same. I appreciate what you are trying to do to conserve the resource for future generations and I wouldn’t be a good steward of the sea if I didn’t do everything reasonalble in my power to assure the success of the species for our grandchildren to enjoy. Good luck on your fishing adventures and may God speed.

We are by no means "fishing gods", but I can speak for both of us when I say, we never shut our ears for good advice. It doesn't matter how much you think you know about fishing. There is ALWAYS someone who knows more. I don't know even half of what I would like to know...

That being said, my response to you was your “show me the law and I will follow it” attitude which implies, "if you don’t show me the law then I w

I definitely learned something from this thread:

  • HMS regulations are something I know nothing of, but now that I have been made aware of them and know where to look I can ensure I am playing by the rules in the future.

  • Flounder Pounder and Catalac are both marine biologists and master carpenters with bionic eyes. How else could they internetly measure** decking boards or length of fish from a picture?
These are the only two that I was “slapping around”. Everything else was posted in jest, as all the other posts seemed to be imformative and aimed at helping to educate those of us who were ignorant to some of this information, even if a touch of smartass was included.

  • Pliers is very helpful.

One more tip: Goti’s are out. Flavor Savers are in…

That guy does look like the guy from mythbusters. And he has a “high vis” undershirt on. If he falls out of the boat, you will see his ass in the spread good!

PS, In case I didn’t congratulate you guys earlier. That is a big ass sail fish. I’ve never seen a chocolate one before though

Here is something else that you can use. Scamps only have to be 20" as you know, but you are allowed to pinch the tail. I asked DNR about pinching the tail and they said it was okay. That’s good to know for you guys who catch the little ones!!!

Actually no. Your smaller ones are about the same size, but whatever. We will bring home a big one this weekend. What size boards are those?
