Offshore , but worth a read Video Added

So we headed out of the sound with a little ice on the boat at 5:30 to try some bottom fishing.

Headed a little north in my buds boat and first drop with my homeade jig with the latest Jigskinz covered (cigar minnow) came tight as soon as I thought it hit bottom. Well, maybe not bottom but then the fight commenced…45lb. AJ[:0]. What a way to warm up the back:stuck_out_tongue:.

Anyway, behind me, Randy is dropping the chicken rig and says, whoa! Something good is on here! He then pulls in a BSB close to 5lbs…yes 5 lbs! I brought 5 home and 3 of them weighed almost 4 after all day on ice. These huge BSB, for me anyway, were in one place as we moved a lot after getting our limit and caught them everywhere, but never near the size that was at that one spot. Garmin won’t forget that spot! It was a lot of fun, as you can imagine.

One big azz Lionfish was caught, and once dead we snipped off it’s venomous spines. Heard they are delicious.

Gonna have a fish fry tom:stuck_out_tongue:.

Caught some Trigger, Vermillion and Red Porgy as well.

Kill every lion fish you cath…as they are invasive and have no enemies but us! And they are freakin’ delicious. Even if you aren’t going to eat 'em, kill 'em before they take over.

A few folks are making a carrier out of a capped length of 6" PVC…and putting them head first down in so they don’t have to worry about the venomous spines. Be careful and handle with gloves!

The numbness of the mouth that you experience after eating one is the sixth basic taste.

Dang man, where you at? Are you thinking of Puffer Fish or did you use a Lionfish spine as a toothpick:stuck_out_tongue::question:

We let it die then cut all the fins/spines off…wish I was the one trying it out.

BTW, that joker laid on ice for quite awhile chilling. I thought it was dead, so I touched it’s mouth and all the fins popped out…****!! Had to wait a little longer:smiley:

They need to go for sure!

Lionfish slime to brush my teeth with instead of toothpaste, and a sea urchin spine to pick em.

Sounds like a fun day!

Posted for DoubleN…Those are some knot heads for sure!

I can see land in the background I think. I’ve been diving the reefs for years and I have only seen one lionfish at the Ross in 100 feet. They are everywhere at the snapper banks. I was hoping they couldn’t tolerate our shallow water reefs. I hope this is not a trend. Great sea bass by the way.

Thanks HHI,

I promise, you could not see land. Think what you are seeing is the rollers/swell.

Also, we were not on artificial/man made reef either.

Hope you are killing those Lions when you are diving, even if you don’t keep em.

No worries on that, I do know a couple people that would get sick in those conditions tho!

Believe they get it in there head prior to going. You have surely seen more than your share of that:stuck_out_tongue:!
