Hey All,
First timer here. I’m just getting into the offshore experience and have been collecting gear the past few months. I’m set for trolling but looking for the right spinning combination for when you find the schools or when you need to pitch baits. I’d like the setup to as versatile as possible, but looking for help in a mid-range price. Reels, rods and pairings.
Thanks in advance.
Reelsmooth,
The one and only spinning combo I use is a shimano baitrunner 4500 on a billfisher 20-30 5’6. I’ve used if for pitching, trolling and even inshore for large reds. For the money I can’t beat it. Total combo $220 w/tax.
Hope this helps and good luck. I can’t wait for this season.
Penn 850 or 950 are awesome reels for the price as well. I bottomfish with a 950 spooled up with 65lb braid and I’ve caught everything from grouper to big AJs and it handles very well.
Around $100 on ebay. $130 retail locally.

As far as rods go, I use a custom jigging rod, but any medium action broomsticks work well for bottomfishing if you don’t want to spend the mula on the trevalas…
…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

I 2nd the 4500. I have mine on Shimano Trevala 30-65# rod. Works great, but for jigging, I’m thinking about getting a slightly heavier rod. Maybe the 80-200 Trevala.

Thanks for the info. I got 2 Penn 760 Live liners and put them on 6’6" MH 50-100 Trevala rods for bottom/Jigging. I wasn’t sure if I need a few more lighter set-ups for straight pitching if I’m already rigged for jigging on the Penns. Maybe the Shimano 4500 is where I need to be. Is it better to have a longer rod for casting (say 7’+).

Dang 23, you killing me with all the links to Ebay! I have to pay bills too, you know…
I second what Mic Lite said…other than the shimano baitrunners have changed a touch…you would want the 8000 or 12000 size. Use mono if you want to pitch to sails or dolphin while trolling. You will pull the hooks on many fish with straight braid. The 17-20# spinners are a blast in the bluewater, and as mentioned we ALWAYS keep a naked dink bait on one. Baitrunners are nice b/c you have the option to free-spool without opening a bail. just IMO
Take a look at the Fin nor 7500 for jigging and bottom. Will develope more drag than the baitrunner or the penns that Mr. E-Bay mentioned. You really need 2 or more for various offshore bottom work.
Go to Haddrells and they will get you straight.

Ditto on supporting local shops even if you do pay more; better sewrvice, advice, and that “warm, fuzzy” feeling inside…

we too have some of the shimano bait runners as well as Diawa Black and Golds and they are nice rods and have worked well for us
… if you want any penn 4/0 c0mbos for bottom fishing I have some in good shape for sale…see classifieds…

If you really want to put your hands on an extremely smooth and versatile reel check out Quantum’s Cabo CST60PTs or CST70PTs Bait Teaser reels. They’re alot like Shimano’s Bait Runner, but much better. I’ll use mine for jigging, casting to fish offshore and surf fishing. I love the free spool on this thing…you can even adjust the tension of the free spool. It’s one awesome reel! Well worth the coin.
Nothing but a “SMART-ELLIC”!
I just put together what I hope is going to be a bruiser bottom rig. I mated up the Shimano Saragosa 18000 on the Travala 80-200 class rod and am waiting on my spool of line to come in.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

That’s pretty stout for Blackfish.

LOL, yeah but one day we’ll be catching those bruisers again. Then there are always donkeys and sharks.

I would say you need to try some of the new Penn items like the Sargus or Conquer reels on the Torque jigging or Torque game fish rods. If you are willing to put $200 on a reel then the new Conquer is for you.You will not find a stronger reel with so many features for the money. If you do not want to pay that much then I would highly suggest the Penn Sargus. These reel are solid as it gets and you want brake your wallet either. Do me a favor and check these items out before you blow your money on other items that will disappoint you.

Three threads and the same awesome walking Spam character in each…oh my god you are the most creative individual I have ever met. Why don’t you contribute something to the conversation instead of the constant failed attempts to gain credibility with a walking can of mystery meat and your few buddies on here.
Does it matter if I do know a person at Penn, it’s not as though I’m walking around getting paid to do this, I just love the brand.
Obviously, you have some sort of affiliation with the fine people at Hormel Foods Corporation…is there any chance you can hook me up with a link to their new Tu

Time for you to earn some street cred.
I want a setup I can catch a 10 to 40 pound range dolphin. I want to be able to cast a chunk of ballyhoo to him with out bird nesting. My budget is $200 for the rod and reel not including line. Screw retail prices we are in a recession I am talking cash here.
What you got?
Post a link with your proposal. I ain’t going to put forth alot of effort here, you got to spoon feed me this one.

Spinning reel. The ole egg beater style. Cast into the wind and not have to worry about back lashing like I do with my bait casters with light baits/lures. I have a set up that is a bit larger than a bass rod. I got spooled on a 15 pound dolphin last year. I would like something with alittle more guts and line capacity but I don’t want to big and heavy.
