Spinning reel. The ole egg beater style. Cast into the wind and not have to worry about back lashing like I do with my bait casters with light baits/lures. I have a set up that is a bit larger than a bass rod. I got spooled on a 15 pound dolphin last year. I would like something with alittle more guts and line capacity but I don’t want to big and heavy.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
So your looking for something on the lines of a Slammer or Spinfisher on what length and action rod? I would like to put you on some new Penn products.
7 foot? John Volmer at Pinnacle marine has a nice rod for $65. 90% of my fishing offshore it trolling. This rod will be used to pitch to schooling dolphin, cast under weedlines while trolling by, and some bottom fishing. My brother bought a shimano in the “bargain bin” in the cabelas store in Louisiana while we where there. It retailed for $199 he got it for $100. Bought a $35 dollar rod and loaded it with 250 to 300 yards of 65 pound braid. I wish they would have had 2. I like the reel.

7’ All star rod from bass pro with a Shimano Spheros 12000 = change left over
or upgade to the new series baitrunner.
The penn spinners that are made in CHINA all flex between the reel seat and the reel. The handles snap at the elbow, and I have 3 like this. It is true that I am hard as hell on tackle, but the shimano reels have held up with no failure. I did have the drag washers replaced on my stradic 8000 after a whole year.
Here is a little proof for the Nasty

Great information from everyone…thanks! Not sure if I made a huge mistake, but I got a 3 Penn 750SSM reels on 7’ Slammer 15-30# rods. I will only be offshore 10 times a year or so (live in Columbia) but wanted a setup that I could cast to schoolies offshore and/or use inshore on the days I made the drive to the coast and it was too nasty to get out.
I was not sure I wanted to put $250+ in a setup that would not get used too hard.
Did I screw up too bad?

You will be fine. Sellsfish has been compared to a 300 pound gorilla he is hard on his stuff. Where did Nasty Dog go?
Thought he was going to hook me up?

Reelsmooth, you had a hard decision picking out the right combination from all the great suggestions above. The Spinfisher and Slammer are great products so I would say you did a great job choosing your tackle. I would like to say if you EVER have an issue with the reels PLEASE feel free to personally contact ME for assistance.
I would say you need to try some of the new Penn items like the Sargus or Conquer reels on the Torque jigging or Torque game fish rods. If you are willing to put $200 on a reel then the new Conquer is for you.You will not find a stronger reel with so many features for the money. If you do not want to pay that much then I would highly suggest the Penn Sargus. These reel are solid as it gets and you want brake your wallet either. Do me a favor and check these items out before you blow your money on other items that will disappoint you.
Scoutin 4 Goodies,
My suggestions for your budget is listed below. Let me know what you think.
These items can be found at Haddrelles Point bait and Tackle
Sargus Reels:$74.99-$84.99
Ugly Stik Big Water:$59.99-$64.99
I want a setup I can catch a 10 to 40 pound range dolphin. I want to be able to cast a chunk of ballyhoo to him with out bird nesting. My budget is $200 for the rod and reel not including line. Screw retail prices we are in a recession I am talking cash here.
What you got?
Post a link with your proposal. I ain’t going to put forth alot of effort here, you got to spoon feed me this one.

I got an interesting PM from nasty , letting me know that they have changed the design, and that he would send me a couple. I will fish them the same and report as usual.
you have earned some “street cred” with me…good job!

I just looked the specs on the 8000. Looks good. I like the handle too. How does it compare to the penn 750ss?

Scoutin 4 Goodies,
The Sargus is a very strong reel and if you look the Sargus and Spinfisher specs I posted below you can see that they are very similar. The biggest difference between the two is the drag system, the Spinfisher has the famous HT-100 and the Sargus has an oil felt drag.
Sargus-Aluminum body
SG7000 240yds/20lb 5BB/1RB 5.3:1 Line Retrieve 39 27.8 oz
SG 8000 240yds/25lb 5BB/1RB 5.3:1 LR 41 29.2
Spinfisher
750ssm 250yds/20lb 5BB/1RB 4.6:1 LR 36 25.7 oz
850ssm 250yds/25lbs 5BB/1RG 4.6:1 LR 40 27.1 oz
Will the sargus handle the tighter drag if I go with braid? Talking about 50 to 65pound. Again mostly used to cast to dolphin but I may bottom fish with it a bit.

Scoutin,
The SG8000 will handle 50-65 braid with ease and they are great for Bottom fishing, Jigging, Sight casting, etc with that said they are also great for catching, wahoo, kings, dolphin, tuna, etc… I use the 3000 and 4000 for inshore fishing and I love them.

There appears to be a bunch to choose from in this price range. I would like to hold a SG8000. I like its price alot.

Do you live near Haddrell’s Point bait and Tackle? They have them! I can promise you that the Sargus is the smoothest and strongest reel at that price point. As for the Fin Nor, I would stay away from that one, I just bought one this week for a competitive sample and man am I disappointed. I would highly recommend you go handle a Sargus before you decide to do anything. I can also insure you if you buy the Sargus, I will personally help you with any issues you may have with your reel but I know you want have any issues with it. Thanks
Nope. Not the light stuff that was linked. Bottomfishing as about drag and the backbone of the reel and rod to accept the pull. Whatever brand, get good drag and retrieve ratio.
