So my buddies and I are looking at trying our hand at dolphin and tuna this weekend. We have fun out to the CHS a few times and are now looking to putting some big fish on the deck. We are running out on s 21’ Epic. We got a four pole set up… Two off the side two off the back. Y’all got any advice for some newbies??? How far we gotta go out?? Seas don’t look too bad so we’re looking to try our luck… Any advice would be great.
This has got to be a troll, but if not, stay in port. Conditions don’t warrant going out in a 21’ for the weekend.

X-2 for Raddaddy. Too low on the learning curve. Go a few times at least with an experienced captain the buddy boat on a good day.

21 is sketch even on a flat day to ledge. This weekend is not fairly flat either…
Take two extra 5 gallon tanks w you…the ride out will be like riding the surf at folly…Be sure and take lots of pics.
Don’t listen to these old wusses on this site, their all working this weekend and pissed because your going and their not.
Thanks everyone for the advice… What am I missing though? Everything that I am looking at say seas 2-3 ft with 10kt winds from the west. I know that after 20nm out it builds but it doesn’t look worrisome. But again, that is why I am posting on here. Have only been out to the CHS 60 a handful of times. From what the Captian down the way told me it’s only 10 or so miles past there and you can start getting into some fish. I’d be happy with anything on the deck and a learning experience. Not looking for any secret spots just looking to learn, any advice is welcomed.
Capehorn16 were working with a 60 gallon tank and only about a half day of fishing. Brining 10 extra gallons nessecary or just a precaution?
Used to run a 21 sea fox out all the time, just be weary of the weather conditions. Check to see if the wind is supposed to pick up later in the day, if it is, dont chance it. Always let someone know what coordinates you are going to run to and time to be back.
Regarding trolling, just go at least 20 miles and when u start seeing a weed line or floating debris usually you will find them underneath it so just troll past them back and forth. I used to rig up ballyhoo and put two lines out far and the middle two short. Good luck
Been a while, acually you should be going further than that. Probably more like 30-35 miles at leasttttttttt. Gotta figure its 8 miles from Wappoo cut to jetties. when u see the water change, and its obvious you will, thats where you start.

It is actually a 22ft boat.
Heck, that one extra foot changes everything.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?
Exactly.
60-90 feet looks doable tomorrow from your boat. There will be very few dolphin and tuna (if any) in those depths at this time. 90 feet is approximately 30 miles from the beach where you can score lots of meat bottom fishing over live bottom (maps unique). Good numbers of dolphin and tuna will be about twice that far and beyond. Better get started at midnight and carry several 5 gallon cans if you want to troll out there and only have 1/2 day. A learning experience you will get.

SaltyTeacher27, We will be out there So yell at me…I usually scan 16. We are going to try our luck on the Mahi Mahi and then finish out on the bottom. If we don’t try them on days like this then we may not ever go, gear up, watch the weather keep eye on wind change fish smart and have fun. If we get out there and its looks a little to risky then we will just bottom fish either way there will be meat on the deck. By the way i’ll be in a 234 Sea Hunt with Yam/250
Sea Hunt 234/250
Four pole setup with an extra foot? Just two tidal rails short of a good time!
Salty, I’m a newbe also and will be heading strait out to 100’ in a Sea Hunt Triton 240. I always listen to the experienced on this site. Do you have an Epirb?
SaltyTeacher27 we’ll be looking forward to a report. Be careful and good luck.
