fresh AJ is good stuff, blind fold most people and you wouldn’t know what it was…infact alot would bet it was grouper:wink:
just cut 2-3 inches from the last worm and keep the rest…
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up and loudly proclaiming, “WOW! What a ride!”

I fed that exact cut of fish to my mother in law just two days ago:wink:,she just loves the tail section

Take those worms out of there and give them to your kid to go catch some stumpknockers outta the pond with while you steak out your kingfish. Then, you’ll have excellent live bait to turn back around and go catch more AJ’s with the next day.
Also, you need to get a sharpening stone on that dull knife…
that pic is just gross. i like to eat what i catch if possible, but i will never eat an aj now, i know that.
The small ones have less in them. I’ve been told that a majority of the worms are in the tail section. Phinigan will tell you just to “cut the shoulders” out, but I’ll stick to fish with parasites that I can’t see wiggling and squirming out of the flesh of the critter I want to consume.
for some reason, the Gulf population, does not seem to be infested with the shark tapeworm larve. They eat AJ all over the Gulf, and it is a very important commercial fish. Almaco jack is a also a great fish for the table, but I can’t get past the worms. They are farming Almaco’s off of Hawaii for the sushi markets.

A 50 pounder here will often only have 6 pounds of meat that isn’t ate up with worms! Take up less room in the fish box by keeping a 12 pounder with no worms instead. Amateur tip*
What’s the min. length on them now? 28" fork or total??

I have never seen a 28" long worm.
I realize this is set up for one of us like a whiffle ball on a tee, so I’m not going to bring someone’s wife or momma into this one. Instead, I’m going to just ask whether you’ve dined on the donkey before or not…

I’ve cut open many small ones…they all have worms…I still love cutting them open though…
I have cleaned and eaten many AJ’s. I do give most away and have had comments like “the best fish I have ever had”. I have had small fish with worms from head to tail and large fish with almost none. I just cut them out. Have you ever had a store bought fish sandwich. I bet they don’t cut them out.

I wouldn’t order reefdonkey in a resturant if that’s what you’re asking…why would you?

Shut up Phin.
I’m back and I’ve promised to behave this time.

You only eat that piece of meat on a deer that is between the hams and you think a reefdonkey is bad. Your nasty:smiley:.
