Opinions for 4/29

Hey gang, looking for opinions for a general direction tomorrow. Was considering either Edisto or Sullivan’s. Looking for BIG sharks. Kayaking baits out with heavy rigs… Your opinions please? If Sullivan’s, could you pm me with a general area, cuz I’ve never fished there before.

Behind Ft Moultrie, gets deep if you’re facing Sumter. Please be careful, very strong tides now, and there’s always a ton of water moving through there, even author without these big tides.

Edisto is the best area I’ve fished for sharks that has easy access. I’ve fished iop, folly, sullys, kiawah, edisto and Seabrook. If you fish a inlet the current is strong and when conditions are bad they are usually worse than front beach. The fort has one spot that gets hits consistently but other than that it is garbage because of hang ups and no bites. This spot is very hard to hit to because of current and drift and everything else. The harbor side is hang up city so fish the side toward the lighthouse. The current is bad but it is super bad in front of the lighthouse where the beach bends and forms a point. This is the second best spot to fish after the first spot I mentioned. This spot is easy to target. In my honest experience the fort is the toughest spot to fish around here and the results aren’t worth it. The grillage jettie area is a dangerous place and if anything happens its 3 miles to the end of the jetties where its about 5 to 10 miles of slop before you hit ocean swells and are out the current. Not to mention that it is the shipping channel and all the other boaters. It gets my vote for most dangerous place in charleston to lbsf. Be safe where ever you go and post your results I’m 0/6 in my last 6 trips with 1 5ftr caught by a buddy one night and 2 6ftrs another night by another buddy. I’m 2/10 but I didnt expect to have any action 3 of those trips since they were so early in the year and a few trips were for less than a couple hrs. I fished locally 8 timesFished sullys 4 times folly 3 times and edisto once. I caught 1 shark at folly and 1 at edisto. Folly and edisto both had better action than sullys. A few times at sullys I didn’t even get a bible and I had gucci bait. Shark fishing is a wait your turn kind of fishing and it is still picking up right now.

I really appreciate the input here! Based on the fact that I was starting out at 5 am today I figured I’d be better off at a place I knew, so I went to Edisto. And I’m glad I did… Got a 78" female sandbar, a 90" male sand tiger, and a 74" female sandbar. Also hooked something that broke the surface about 4 times before it snapped me off, and hooked something that bit clean through my 450# cable… All in all, a very productive day. I’m happy! Thanks again for the advice CMH and 40inch.

Nice catchin there Walleye , did ya have anybody beating you up about attracting jaws???

I didn’t, actually. I heard from another fisherman that there was one lady, later in the day, that was giving him a hard time, saying the rangers were going to kick him out for fishing around swimmers… But you know how that goes. Nobody hassled me though. And all three times, it drew the crowd, everyone cheered when the sharks swam off, and then everyone got back in the water. Lol. Ha.

Nicely done. I keep trying to get people to fish edisto with me but the people I shark fish with won’t fish any where but sullys. Not to hate but on the weekend and day time your asking for trouble fishing by that much people. The big sharks come in closer at night also.

Walleye you are a quick study. Didn’t you start shark fishing last year. Great day for you sir!

Thank you sir. I wish I could say I’m as smart and cool and “a quick study” as you say… Lol… but I won’t lie. I’ve actually been intentionally fishing for sharks for about 9 years… BUT… I’m from Cleveland Ohio originally, and previously my sharking trips were VERY few and far between, so the opportunities were limited and the learning curve was steep, to say the least. Plus, living up there, I couldn’t justify buying big gear and a kayak that I might use once a year, if I was lucky and the stars aligned. It was only a little over a year ago that I moved to the Charlotte area and could go on weekend trips to the ocean and really put in some time on the sand, therefore (with all the research, practice, and now proximity) able to justify getting a tuna rod and senator 9/0 and a kayak and starting to hone my craft, and begin having success. You don’t know how hard it is to be an ocean nerd and be 10+ hours from the nearest saltwater. Lol. Anyway, being able to feel the raw power and put my hands on the creatures that so haunt our imaginations is a dream come true for this dork. Ha. Going for 8’+ as my next challenge!

ah another ohioan sharking on the beach. 8 footers are there to be had! granted im not in the florida/georgia border but this sand tiger went 8 feet 8 inches. even better is that he took a smaller bait on a surf rod rather than my 9/0 senator.

Yes indeed, another Yankee shark fisherman. Lol. Nuke, i always read your posts, and they are always my kind of fish porn. Ha. Very encouraging. That 8.8 must have been REALLY exciting on the spinning gear. Biggest i’ve landed on my 12’/65# is a 6’ sandbar. I have heard much bigger game can be landed that way, just haven’t experienced it myself… YET… Its like anything else though. Practice and persistence pays off. The appropriate gear doesn’t hurt either. All things considered, in my short time being able to do this with some regularity, I feel reasonably successful and I can’t wait to see what I pull in next time…

Oh, and i know this is slightly out of the area, but a couple weeks ago, I was in Islamorada and pulled in this very pretty 7’ female lemon. Up until my big sand tiger this past weekend, she was my biggest. Just felt like sharing.

Oh, and 40inch, im planning on going down again either next weekend (13th) or the following weekend (20th) when the low tides are morning/evening. I might not mind some sharking company, if its in your cards to fish edisto…
