These are 3 test panels that I made to simulate the sole and deck planking on a boat that I’m building. There will be a lot of natural bright finished wood on the boat, mostly mahogany, some ipe, and the planking is from 100+ year old heart cypress. The painted areas will be white. What color caulking between planks would you like best if it were yours?

The one on the right would look best over the long haul. The white will get grungy and dirty and take away from the beauty of all that wood. The center one just doesn’t look good at all.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

x2 - i like the white best to start but would be a biatch to keep clean while keeping the wood protected…

No question, use the black. The white will look great at the start but will be maintenance PITA down the road.

Thank you all for the input. Keep it coming. Maintenance should not be an issue, the caulked seams are covered with 3 coats of clear epoxy, plus 6 ounce glass cloth, with more epoxy, plus Awlgrip Grip-Tex non-skid, then a couple coats of Awlwood, for UV protection over that. It looks clear but there is a lot of protection. Maintenance aside, just comparing colors.

Edit: I think the white will probably yellow over time if exposed to the sun, but this boat will be stored indoors and only see daylight maybe 2 days a month. If it last as long as I live, that will be good enough:smiley:

I like the black best. I think the white takes away from the natural wood color.

I think it’s a consensus that the brown caulk is out. Me too. White or black?

I like the black best…infact i am thinking about redoing the caulk on my boat in all black this winter…

If you can keep it clean, I like the white. It POPS.

The white is going to look best. Classic wooden boat look. Will not take away from the wood when the rest of the boat is white around it. That wood will pop out on its own easily.

I like the black, dark wood looks good.

But an earth tan color would look even better.

Something like beach sand sprinkled on the caulk and then covered with clear would be real cool, give it some originality.

White, White ,White with all that topcoat it will not get dingy. Be sure to post finished product! You do beautiful work!

White. Black reminds me of the 70’s wood paneling I just got rid of in my living room.

right one.

Black since tan is not an option.

White caulking will be too busy looking over a large area. Classic black never goes out of style.

Black.

you will have less worry with the black and it looks more natural with the wood, in my opinion, it allows the wood to stand out not accent the white , but you are the one who will be living with it
