Optikers 2011 Year in Review

2011 was a great “fishing” year for me. Here are some highlights…

Last winter was my first winter of flats fishing due to my new to me Whaler. I learned a lot about what not to do, and was frustrated many times. But I was rewarded for my persistence

The spring highlight was Cobia fishing, and I was able to guide my son to his best fish ever

There was also a day I won’t soon forget. I was out solo and found a hole stacked with huge reds. It was pouring rain. I’m getting soaked and having multiple rods go off with 28"+ reds one after another. Got my PB red that day. 31" tagged.

I was finally able to be successful targeting Spades. My boy and I had a fantastic day when all went perfectly. We caught so many we were sore, and could get doubles on command.

Got my first topwater red (The next trip out I got 4 more…)

Did som yak fishing in Jax with a new found friend JohnYaxJax

Was finally able to get my first grass-red OTF (super pumped about that one!)

Learned a ton about trout fishing from one of Charleston’s best

Caught my first fish on a baitcaster

And the best by far was getting involved in a fishing club, the Summerville Saltwater An

Man, looks like a banner year all right. Gonna be hard to beat that. My year was nothing like yours, every flattie I caught was 13", did not manage a trout. Did reasonably well with the reds, caught my first from a yak, my biggest being 31" (what a fun ride) and my biggest of the year thanks to Vinman (32"). I still have a lot of “to dos” on my list, 1st sheep, 1st topwater, 1st trout, etc… Hoping to get down that way a little more and add to my list of accomplishments. Hopefully we’ll have a mild Winter and 2012 will be even better than 2011.

heckuva year! happy 2012

Impressive Dave. You definatley have had a great year. I agree about the club. It has definately improved everyones fishing. Can’t wait to see what this year brings.

Breaking out the Heatmeister is so 2010.

I was hoping for a movie showcasing those new video skills too.

Also in the interest of balance, I have it on good authority that you birdnested that baitcaster 482 times before you could cast it outta the boat. And that it took a Ginsu knife to cut 200 yds of braid off a that baitcaster.

Ok I kid because I care.

You’re a helluva fisherman, a quick study, and a terrific virtual friend. Thanks for all the laughs.

Dang Peapod, you got me tearing up.

Heatmeister pic is recycled early 11 (I think, memory not so good)
You have seen all my vids so far, I’m not the subject
And FWIW I only birdnested it 82 times, but not bad enough to cut my line…yet.
And if we fished together once, we are real friends, not virtual

PeaPod, I challenge you to reply with your highlights. And you too Redsneck. And especially BOSN, who had a red letter year

Well I used to make an annual highlight reel complete with vintage southern rock. Then along came that jerms fella and I realized what a sheltered, insignificant, pimple on the beehind of the universe kind of life I really lead. I was scarred for months. So thanks for rippin off that scab O.

Yes there is jerms, then the rest of us. I still care about what the rest of us did

Very nice, sir! Lots of firsts in that review!

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.
