I have a 23’ Tidewater CC and I am looking at the Taco 280 bases for our boat. My question is I have an option to get 15’ tele poles or 18’ tele poles. What would you guys recommend for this size boat? There is only 1lb in difference with the weight and I would gain 3’ on each side. These will be mounted on a hard top.
I don’t know either, my boat came with outriggers…I gotta figure out if they have all the proper rigging to work.

Don’t know what to recommend but wanted to know how do you like your Tidewater? I saw a 230CC at the boatshow last weekend and really liked the layout. Reviews online all state ride quality is poor but compared to my bay boat, I’m sure it rides like a Cadillac. I’ve looked at Seafox, SeaHunt and Scouts and for the price I think Tidewater wouldn’t be a bad choice. THANKS and hope you find the right outriggers
Get the longer poles. If you can afford the carbon fiber ones, get those. I would have no issues putting 20’ carbon fiber poles on a boat that size. Honestly, the aluminum poles are a bit flimsy and you will notice that the 18’ aluminum is more flimsy than the 15’ aluminum. This might annoy you or it might not depending on how far back you run your lines. I don’t run into the same issue with the carbon fiber ones.

The boat is great, we regularly make trips out to 40miles for some trolling and bottom fishing. We have had the boat now in anything from no slop to 4’ stacked up (which was a slooooooow ride). The boat handled well for the conditions and would probably take more of a beating in a bad situation but the crew not so much. As far as it being a comfortable dry ride I too went through the same dilemma that you did when selecting this boat. I have zero complaints about making this purchase and would do it again tomorrow. It is a solid boat and provides plenty of room for a day on the water without issues.

I used the floppy 15 ft aluminum and now have the 20 ft carbon double-rigged poles. The Long carbon is worth the extra. Forget the length of the boat, just consider how sharp you can turn with the super wide spread.

Glad to hear firsthand, tough sifting through reviews online. Hopefully we’ll pull the trigger on one here this season and see you out there. Thanks for the info!
Sorry to jump in and troll this post but figured best not to start a new outrigger post. Taking buddies 23’ Nautic Star to Keys and Ft Lauderdale this summer. He’s trying to sell it so not trying to dump too much cash. I have spare tigress 15’ poles and thinking about just putting in some gunnel Mount bases and tubes. Anyone have experience running gunnel Mount style? We’ll be planning to do a little trolling and fingers crossed for a flat day to make a run to Bimini

Yes, it's pretty easy. If you have the ability to mount T-top outriggers but you choose to do gunnel mount, then you don't deserved to go to Bimini and the sea will be angry that day. Any more questions?
Great advice from Skinny. Before you commit to aluminum, contact Wes(Phin) and see what he can do for you with the carbon fiber. I love mine on my smaller Pioneer 197! Customer service, quality, and weight offset the cost for me! Really, give Wes @ Marsh Tacky a call.
I think those might be a little out of my price range, I do like them though. What do y’all think about the Taco 280 bases and the Lee tele 18’ carbon fiber poles?

It’s not my boat J! Can’t make a man pay over $1000 when he can spend $50 and get the job done. I have a canvas top on the new bay boat and haven’t looked at the ability I have yet. I probably won’t do any outriggers. And what’s Bimini got to do with the placement of the outriggers?

If you have to chose between taco 15’s and taco 18’s in their aluminum reel riggers in their 280 grand slams in a 23ft center console, I would go with the 15’s. Kind of surprised skinnee recommended poles that he’s bent or broken on several occasions from what I hear.
The lee’s Retractable carbons are fine if you store them indoors.
We have most of the outriggers mentioned above in the shop, and we listen to what customers tell us, so that’s where I’m coming from when I say go with 15ft aluminum’s over 18ft aluminums.
Weight isn’t everything, and neither is length. Someone may have a 25ft bayliner, and you would laugh if he told you it was better than your 23ft boat since it was a 25ft boat, right?

Thank you Phin for all of the input, this is really good to know from first hand knowledge. I tried giving you a call today but I guess you were hard at it building those badass outriggers! I think I have narrowed it down or at least I think I have to the Taco 280 bases and the Lee 18’ Carbon poles or the 20’ (they will be removed and stored inside). What do you think about that setup?
This is a rather large purchase so I want to make sure that I get it right or as close to right the first go around. I really appreciate all of the ■■■■■■■■ thus far!

Will call you first thing. Sorry we were backed up until late today dealing with vendors and some problems with a freight
I’ve got a set of Marsh Tacky 17’ retractable outriggers as well as a center rigger that I’d be willing to sell. They are awesome tools to have and will enable you to troll with teasers, dredges, and a wider spread, all of which make a big difference on a smaller center console. Shoot me a message if you’re interested.
