Was eating some local HHI oysters on the half shell a few weeks ago (awesome by the way) and noticed on orange-ish “lump” inside the shell next to the oyster. I had already eaten several and they tasted so good I just picked the “lump” out and kept eating. A couple of minutes go by and I notice that the “lump” is moving! I look closer and it looks like a little crab. So I grab my i-Phone and did a little googling and lo and behold it’s an oyster crab. I had never heard of one before and thank goodness they are harmless. Here is a photo of the one I almost ate (it was about half the size of a dime):
Here is a link to the wiki for oyster crabs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_crab
According to the wiki: The oyster crab, Zaops ostreus, is a small, whitish or translucent crab in the family Pinnotheridae. Found specifically in oysters, it is an edible sea food delicacy.
Any of you heard of this?
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
