I know this is off of the topic but im coming to the coast this weekend and am looking to get my hands on some oysters. Im supposed to get some from a buddy but I want to know how long can i keep them on ice? I got a decent sized cooler which i built a rack in about 3 inches from the bottom. The plan was to put the oysters in there and then keep ice on them and let the water drip beneath the rack so the oysters dont sit in stagnant water. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks…
that sounds like a good plan, If there fresh when you get them they will last a week to ten days
You can also set your oysters in the river in your bag and they will be fine, that’s how my buddy does it and he will eat off them for a while.
not sure if there’s such a thing as too cold, sounds like yours might work better with the ice under the rack and the oysters on it with a few pieces thrown across the top every once in a while. refrigerated is plenty cold enough.
check here for open grounds, the whole coast was closed right after the storm and things have been opening back up. planning to get the season’s first bucket of singles sunday in the folly.

If they are closed, they are still alive and okay to eat. If you do see an open one, tap it, if it closes you are good. Do not freeze them, it will kill them and then they won’t be safe to eat.
edit: comment on open grounds was for all readers, I missed the fact that you’re probably not doing the actual picking.
PS the above configuration also gives you a lot more capacity for oysters!
