Pawleys Island Trip

Hey Guys,

Hope all is well well. Have done a lot of reading on here for both Inshore and Surf Fishing. I’m headed up to Pawleys next week for vacation and have a few new surf rods I am looking forward to checking out.

I’ve read about the North and South inlets. I was interested if anyone has experience fishing the actual beach? We stay just south of the South Causeway at a fairly private part of the beach - doesn’t get too crowded. What species can I expect this time of year? There are Beach Groins/Jetties to the right and left - any tips for targeting fish around those? What about walking to the end of them?

Thanks in advance - have definitely enjoyed reading your entries.

Cheers and Happy 4th.

I used to fish there a lot. Lots of sharks, Rays - but also some whiting and blue fish off the actual beach. In the north inlet off the rocks you can catch anything, flounder, red / black drum, whiting, trout… It’s a little over fished now but still good. Best bait is cut shrimp for a lot of bites. Looking for more edible fish use mud minnows(for flounder, trout). I used to use a cast net to catch everything fresh. Live mullet or whiting off the beach for bigger sharks , a lot of fun. Check the hardware store off north causeway for bait - usually a guy selling Shrimp out of a truck. High tide of course.

Just please oh please don’t be the guys fishing middle of the day near anyone, current too strong and no one needs sharks being reeled-in amidst people.

Also a tip - during high tide look for schools of bait being worked near the shore - the big black clouds in the water.

Thanks for the reply and good info. No worries on the day fishing - I’ve got 2 kids swimming out in that water after 10 am or so.

Definitely will be packing my cast net for catching bait.

You mention high tide. I’ve read a lot about what tides are best and opinions to be over the map - of course nobody suggests slack. Why high?

Thanks!

Take a light rod with you and go to the south end and fish the last 2-3 hrs of falling tide using 1/4 oz jigheads with gulp baits or finger mullet/shrimp. Park in the lot and walk all the way to where the creek makes a sharp turn toward the ocean. Good current with good depth. Flounder and reds show frequently. Tight lines.
