So this has been discussed before but since it is in the highlines again, lets discuss it again.
I say pay them a small stiffen. enough so they can go out. take there girl to dinner and a movie. Think about it, they cant work for a buster or supporter. Um, how many businesses in the Columbia area do not fit that? What about Clemson?
So it ends up that they cant work at all.
Once they become NFL eligible(2 years out of HS) they should be able to profit from their name.
I think if they can increase the stipend for all student athletes then go for it.
All the conference commissioners are hinting that they are going to make their own super division of around 64 schools that can afford to do that. Rumors are that the change could be as early as next season.
Its the mid to small sized schools that have been opposed to it because they can’t afford it.
They get 9000,00$ in pale grant $ a year that’s cash in pocket not to mention all the personal training they get that would cost thousands free school free food free rent sounds like a good life to me. The players are doing something they have dreamed of and want to do. I go to work pay rent and if I need training I get payed less jmho if we pay college athletes how long will it be before high school starts it and then we have 17 year olds making more than their parents. Makes no sense to me it that’s just me
thats a good point about the smaller schools. not sure how to handle that. but I would think all FBS schools could handle it
Yeah man, the major conference schools could for sure and its been the smaller ones outvoting them on issues like this. And the NCAA’s attempt to create an even playing field causes to many problems.
Considering how big CFB has gotten recently, with all the money, its time to let the big dogs eat and compete on a different level than the mid-major D1 schools.
Jerb, are you saying they get $9,000 a year for fun money on top of housing, meal plans and tuition?
Sounds like things have changed. My girlfriend back in school played volleyball at Clemson. Practiced every day, sometimes 2x a day, had classes, home/work projects and more classes. She didn’t have time to work. At the time full scholly athletes only received tuition, housing allowance and meal plans. So, she never had money to eat out or go at night.
But, if they now get 9k a year on top of all that then yeah they should not be complaining.
They are all already being paid a very large salary, it’s what they choose to do with it. How much does tuition, room/board and meals cost? Medical care and training? Uniforms and clothes issued to support the University? How much of a stipend? Paying players vast sums of money will ruin everything we all love about college football.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Salty, Fish was just saying a small stipend. Not vast sums of money. Even $200 a month so they can have a little fun at night after all their hard work would go a long way.
Did you read my note about my girlfriends athletic experience in college?
I pretty much had to pay for everything when we went out because she was broke and didn’t have enough free time to get a part time job. She was very grateful to have a full ride and didn’t complain…but a small amount of money each month on top of tuition/housing/meals would have helped because those athletes don’t have time to work.
They get a stipend and it needs to be increased, the only thing that has changed in that aspect in the last 20 years is the worth of the dollar that they receive. I agree 20000% with that. Anything above that is stupid.

I heard a guy on the radio that played college football say he received a pale grant and that was a big part of his commitment . Yes that’s 9gs a year in the pocket. I can’t type all he said but he went to a school that would give him the pip “pale in pocket” that probably isn’t true for all sports but he made it clear that he wanted that $ and he got it and could tell you the day the check would arrive. All school’s do it but I don’t know the requirements to get that $ From what he said college football players don’t hurt for anything
This is ridiculous. If they can’t go pro, they should get some cash. I don’t comprehend how anyone thinks what is being done to Clowney this year is OK. That man literally could have people lined up to pay him millions of dollars this year, but he has to play for free. Oh wait, not “free” he gets the privilege of living in a crappy dorm and eating cafeteria food til January while attending classes he will never use. He should consider himself fortunate.
How would you guys feel if someone walked into your place of employment tomorrow and said you have to do a free apprenticeship for a year. Don’t worry, room and board included, so you should shut up and quit your complaining.

I really can’t believe this is even a debate.
So, how do you determine the guys that could already be in the NFL? . Gather a pool of NFL scouts and determine who should get some cash? Then they advise the school?
less than 5% of CFB football players go to the NFL. very, very few of those guys are even ready for the NFL before they are 20 or 21.
Come on now. Everyone who knows anything about college football knows the game MVP or the NFL ready players are handed envelopes stuffed with cash. I do think it is insane how much the NCAA makes off of the game. Maybe they should set up some kind of profit sharing?

Not the same thing as coming in tomorrow and asking that, but, if said work was set up where we had to prove ourselves and there were rules set up we had to follow and this was at the very beginning and if I performed very well there were promises of millions of dollars, then yeah, I would gladly do a year, heck even 2, of apprenticeship. Especially if they paid for room and board and fed me. That would be a sacrifice that I would make and I would FEEL VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE IT! Considering that less than 1% of the population has that opportunity. Not to mention that the job (USC in Clowney’s case) did all of the training and making you into that superstar. Oh wait, He was that good right out of HS, I forgot. He was good, just not as great as he is now and that is not ALL him!
These are the rules. There are insurance policies in place and there are ways for them to negotiate paying them. they just have to start acting like adults and do the right thing for them and their future instead of acting entitled and thinking everyone else is he

Not sure how it is as Sakkerliner but at Clemson those players had the choicest Apartments to live in, had their own dining hall with chef (they ate prime rib, steaks, seafood, etc on a daily basis), and had classes and tutors. If they don’t take advantage of their educational offerings, then that is their own fault. They are one hit away from being out of the game, always have a ■■■■■■■■ plan.
I think he should consider himself extremely lucky that he’s afforded those opportunities and the training of the staff for basically a an average of 24hrs of total work on the football field, Gameday Saturdays, over a 4 year career.
Increase the stipend by all means. Pay for play is just stupid and will absolutely ruin everything good about College Football.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so
Full tuition, room and board, all the food they can eat, free personal training, in some cases ( if they aren’t total screw offs) they are handed a college degree which is worth $$$$ for the remainder of their working life, health insurance while at school + all the free clothing, etc. that comes with being a big time athlete.
Their parents aren’t having to pay a dime. They even get tickets to the games, etc… Why can’t thier parents send them some cash for the “poor” guy to “go to a movie” or “have a pizza out”. I have to send my kid money for those things so why do the parents whose kids are getting everything else free get a pass? Life is about choices. These people were not held at gunpoint and made to be college football players… they chose it and with it comes all the rest of the good and bad.

While I’m not for “paying players” I will say a lot of these football players don’t have parents that are able to send them money.
Read a story about Ricky sapp in high school and he was happy if he could find a bag of chips to eat on the weekend.

Then college should have seemed like a buffet. Seriously, you have a lot of driving and partying ahead this weekend. Be safe.
