Personal Property Taxes on Boat... HOLY COW!

OUCH!!!

This will be my first experience with SC (Jasper Co, especially) Tax rates on Personal Property, ie, my Boat.

…insert every expletive known to man…

How do you guys deal with it? Do you all just suck it up and pay it, or do you try to appeal it every year?

They have my boat (which I sold 6 months ago) “valued” at $8000 more than I paid for it, and I can only assume that the bill they gave me is for the entire year. In reality… I sold it 6 months ago!

Some advice from you fellas would be welcomed

YEP! I received the property tax statement on mine and it is almost as much as my house! This is in York Co.

Now…now…remember we have to do our part and pay our “fair share”. Won’t be too long and “all the gravy will be gone.” The only advice I can give is to keep your boat as long as you can. The older it gets, the cheaper the taxes become.

That’s true, we must pay our share. I just need to find out how to join the socialist party to let someone else pay my share for me! I guess just get elected.

ASW, I live in Jasper County and just opened my tax bills today. I’ve been keeping a close eye on our property taxes since 2005. My Houses, cars and Real Estate taxes seem to be in-line. But something is definitely wrong with my boat taxes. Jasper County has the motor and boat valued at $14,000 more than I paid for them. I plan to call JC tomorrow. Thought I would reply to this post, just in case others are having the same problem.

I do believe we should pay our fair share, but I feel pretty confident there is some type of error with our boat taxes.

Write up a protest and send it to them. They will most likely lower your tax bill after they read your explaination.

i’m Jasper County fella… i think i’ll hold out on purchasing a boat now… hope ya’ll can get it situated out.

Salt…Just curious…Did you buy the boat locally at a dealer?
Some items (vehicles/boats) they don’t seem to be able to track.
Also, you can dispute the amount. Seems like you have a good case.

They will charge you for the highest amount they can. Most just pay it with and say oh well. My wife makes me go down there every year to question their bill.

Just curious…if the boat was valued at say $10,000, how much are we looking at?

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Draper, let me know how it goes. I’m writing up a formal (aka legal) document noting how much was paid, when I sold it, and my justified calculations of both. I guess I will either drop in or mail it. Calling them is a joke! I put it on hold for ****s & giggles at my desk. An hour later… elevator music drove me crazy. Still on hold.

Fishianado, no I bought it from a person. Locally, but not a dealer. I bought it in 2012.

Surffish- Lemme do the math. At 10k, that would be $345. They’re asking me for 4 figures.

One of my friends (who’s an idiot) made a good (for him) point, though.
Considering I sold it… what can they do if I don’t pay it? Take the boat that I don’t have?

Okay guys, I had a few phone conversations with the folks in the Jasper County Auditor’s office. They were actually very nice to me. I provided them with a copy of my “Notorized” Bill of Sale, and some screen shots from the NADA website stating the value of my boat. Typically JC requires a boat appraisal to reduce the JC appraised value. However, there was an obvious problem with my boat’s appraised value. If you feel your JC appraised value is high, you will most likely need to provide them with a formal appraisal.

ASW you have a pm.
