Black panther has been seen in upper dorchester county around st. george. Not to far from edisto. Some wicked magumbo goin on if you ask me. carry heat unless you want to be covered up like that deer.
Looks like an old wiccan ritual done back in the 1700’s. Been seeing a lot of this lately near folly beach. I think it has something to do with seasonal change and the witches do it to ward off evil spirits and summon their gods. Did you find monkey brain or chickens feet nearby as well? Beware.
S&A , fancy seeing you here telling folks its a bobcat. Fact is we find the same type deer kill here in the upstate. We have even found deer draped over tree limbs some 25’ up in trees. These cats are being seen from the coast to the mountains. There will be a really good documentary next Jan 17th on SCETV.

the sign should read
“CAUTION”
a very big bobcat can weigh 40#s. killing grown deer isnt their first choice, but not uncommon.
an average sized mt lion track is about 4" across.
both critters cover up kills.
bobcats are well established throughout SC
Mt Lions exist only from anecdotal reports “Bo saw a panther at the club”
Both cats will run up a tree when chased.
SC has more dog hunters than you can count, I havent seen a picture of a treed Mt Lion.
I do not see a single drop of blood anywhere in the pics.
I have personally come across numerous mt lion kills and caches, they arent that clean, by a long shot.
my guess: deer died from “something”, bobcat came across, covered it up for possible brunch…or…completely staged.
A few years back in Sumter county found a couple deer that were killed and covered the same way. Then durring deer season following the a mt. lion was seen by 2 hunters and a man who lives on the property. The two hunters are pretty sharp but the ol man who lives on the place is a drunk. A bobcat could do that but the pic puts my mind to a mt. lion. Either way, watch your back.

That’s a good point. Everybody has a story to tell about them or their dad, brother, cousin, whatever seeing one but they either forgot their camera that day or couldn’t get a shot off.
I want hard evidence or I remain an non-believer.
I agree with Sprig on that one, it was a good point that he made. I can personally say that I have witnessed a black panther in the woods beside HWY 501 late last august. But a big cate like that would seem to make a much uglier scene and kill than what is seen right there.
Reel men wrestle does
Those are good valid questions and I’ve pondered them too. I’ve seen a bear in the Lowcountry around Walterboro and never heard of one being treed around there. Plenty of doggers around Walterboro.
In reference to the notion that if they were around, you’d see roadkills, we have lots of bobcats but rarely do you see them dead on the side of the road. Apparently, they’re smarter about cars than 'possums.
It’s the game cameras that will eventually bring us better proof. Even that will be contested as released pets though.
Trail camera pictures of bears in the lowcountry is a pretty common occurence, but i have never heard of a mt. lion picture being taken. As far as getting run over it seems that with all of them that are seen by people driving one would get run over eventually, maybe even die of illness or old age and be found.

I have personally seen a bobcat kill a deer that size. It was one of the all time wildest things I have ever seen. That cat weighed 55# and is sitting on top of my entertainment center right now. It is not uncommon for me to find where bobcats have covered game like that when I am working my trapline.

IS IT LEGAL TO KILL A LONGTAIL IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE:question:
I’ve heard of sightings in the hwy 162 to 174 area? they were from people I would trust with my old lady, but I have never seen the critter.
Some turkey hunters even told me about one in the FM near MCVL. Who knows MR. Longtail is a great mystery???

The long-tail doesn’t care if its legal. If he’s hungry he kills and eats hopefully another animal. Big Cats BIG problems one day in S.C.

No pictures of cat or whatever caused it. Maybe I hung out too long around it and left to much human scent. I do not know.
There was lots of blood around the scene on the grass, the straw, and the hind area of the deer. I took pictures of it all, just did not want to post those bloody pictures. Don’t always know whose little virgin eyes might be looking.
I am guessing a large bobcat. The deer may have been wounded. There are bobcats on this private island.
Look in this months Field and Stream. There is an article on cougars and there spread across the US. Not in SC according to it, but it did say they travel as much as 200 miles. They are in Florida and Jacksonville is about 200 miles from me on Edisto.
E82, there isn’t much more too share except the bloody pictures.

I have an old Oak tree that has a cavity in the bottom of it. Apparently something went in there to get away from whatever was chasing it. whatever was chasing it clawed up the outside of that tree pretty good. I had a DNR agent out there and he swears it was a panther that did it. Too big to be a bobcat.
I’m going camping and / or turkey hunting there this weekend. Will take a picture if I can.
Long story short, I’m a beleiver that there are panthers here. Still not sure what did that to the deer, though.

After reading articles and looking at the photos of the cat and foot, the dead deer and cat tracks I photographed could possibly be from an eastern cougar. Still there is no hard core proof, but one day we will get some pictures of long tailed big cats in SC. I just hope that no one kills any of them. Their numbers are very low and endangered.
For the longest time people didnt believe that coyotes were making a come back in SC…now there are a few places i see/hear them almost everytime. It’s gonna take someone shooting one or hitting one for all this to be resolved.

El Cid91, We’re looking forward to seeing those pics of the clawed-up tree. You say a local DNR agent thinks it may have been a panther type cat? I’d like to add those pics to my scrapbook. I’ll be checking in on you later to see those pics. Give Tony, with the Post & Currier a call.
