I had some land that boardered the Shanondoah National park in Virginia before moving down here. What park rangers had told me up there was, “offically” the eastern mountain lion is extinct. “technicaly” there around. I have a picture of a paw print that was near a deer kill also. that one was shoved up under a dead fallen tree and partually covered also. I laid a pack of cigarettes next to the print for scale. sent it thru a few people and ended up at an expert that worked at the National Zoo. his reply written on the back was. “2 year old mountain lion, be careful”
Fish tremble at the mention of my name.
NOT LEGAL TO SHOOT…The Eastern cougar was placed on the US End. Species List in 1973.
calibogue, its not legal to shoot man either, however if man is coming at you with a blade to cut you to shreds and you have a gun, what would you do?? RIGHT, shoot and claim self defense. Its a dead cat , tell the world it was you or the cat. No law against that. Be careful this week … later

OK, I took some pics this weekend, you guys tell me what you think did this:
Hope these turn out…Let me know what you think

El Cid 91, good pics, wasn’t a dog, must have been a BIG CAT. That’s why I think we need to prove for sure that these cats are in our state. The sign that I speak of, should be a warning to all, to enter at your own risk, panther seen on trail.
The sign should read
“CAUTION”
The other dead deer find on Edisto that I mentioned in my earlier post was determined to be a big bobcat with the use of a game camera, so I was told.
I would say a couple of coon dogs did this after the racoon went in the hole. Why would a cat be chewing on this tree?
I don’t think a sizeable coon could hide in that hole and most of the claw marks are horizontal and they were BIG claws. I doubt it was a dog.
I will say this, I don’t go in the woods unarmed anymore.

El Cid 91,
what kind of tracks are you seeing it that creek bed? Looks like a good spot for a trail cam!
“The Unsinkable Legend”
Those claw marks are probably 8 months old or so. I haven’t seen any unusual tracks over there lately. The area behind and to the left of that picture is about 50 acres of DENSE undergrowth which I think they would prefer. Every time I go out, I look for tracks but none so far. If I see some, I’ll photo them

El Cid 91 good job on those pics they tell a great story. The cat that did that was p.od. at whatever was in the tree. She was planning to eat it also. Use caution while out there next time . That cat has about 80sq mi. that she calls her territory. Shes a loner also.
“CAUTION”
PANTHERCROSSING
If you find any cat tracks, have a ruler handy with the photo or better yet get a mold made of it. Because of the work I do, I have a small amount of quick drying mortar mix in my truck. That would make a great cast of a wild animal track. I just wish that I would have thought about using it when I found the cat track beside the deer carcass. Live and learn. Besides I was on a time schedule that day and hate being late.
ElCid, Where in the state were those pictures of the damaged tree taken? The hole looks big enough to me for a raccoon to get in, especially if it is being chased by something that wants to kill it.
upsmansc, you mentioned there was a mountain lion and a panther on you hunt club property and there was a rumor that the mt. lion was a once held captive illegally. It seems that every time someone reports seeing a panther , someone says oh well it was someones escaped or released pet and that justifies the sighting. Most folks accept that and don’t ask , who released it ???
There has been hundreds of sightings across the state and I’ve never heard of anyone admitting they lost their cat. Wouldn’t you think if someone went to or called the authorities to report a sighting it would make good sense to investigate and report findings, rather than telling the sight-er you probly saw a bobcat or dog. END OF STORY?? NO!! Big Cats - Big STORY - IN South Carolina be careful.
thanks
SHOW US THOSE PICS

That picture was taken in Meggett. Again, those marks are a a few months old but I have not seen any unusual tracks. I’ve seen a couple of small Bobcat tracks but he didn’t leave those clawmarks. Couple that with the wild dogs attacking all of those goats (killed 26 I think?) and yes, I pack heat when I walk through the woods.

el cid cool pic look at how spread apart those claw marks are and the mwidth of the claw marks. i am wit you they are here .i worked as a surgveyor for 3-4 years and have heard from very reliable sources that there here before daniel island became developed my crew cheif older fella told me of 2 accounts wit a black panther on the island , one was durin a tree survey he said something caught his eye and it was a large black cat beded up in a big live oak. he said he backed away very slowly and after that account he was aloud to carry his pistol on the island , the second account was from a sol legrea local that i worked with that also saw a large cat on the wando side of the island stalkin in the hi grass , so i agree there here
