Pier fishing at Folly and possibly Mt P?

I’m new to the area and have been trying my luck at pier/surf fishing. I always use shrimp. Is their a certain tide or time of the day that is usually best for this type of fishing? Also any other baits and advice would be greatly appreciated. My wife and I love it here and are trying to get out to fish as much as possible (My work is crazy). We also tried at the end of the bird sanctuary where the dolphins swim. Any ■■■■■■■■ would be much appreciated!!!

Fish the incoming tide till 2 hours past falling
Shrimp is a good bait, try some cut finger mullet
Cast to the breakers, the waves stir up sediment on bottom that the bait fish eat, which brings the larger ones
Water temp isn’t quite where it needs to be yet, should be there in 2-3 weeks

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

Welcome to the forum!!! I’d lend some advice but know little about pier fishing. Surf advice read the post under DFreedom.

Yeah? You and everyone else…

Each pier fishes differently. For me shrimp is the first choice at either with mud minnows and mullet running a close 2nd. At folly you don’t have to fish the end to catch fish. In fact it seems some of the better fishing is in the white wash. Mt Pleasant has been hit or miss for me but I have always done well when fishing the grass line with mud minnow or finger mullet.Using a popping cork at Mt Pleasant is a lot easier as well and catches a good variety. Hope this helps some.

I’m in the same boat BigBB. I’ve been out about 10 times since I started surf fishing. Got a 30" red drum off Folly in Dec. Since then, it’s been quiet for me. I have been using only finger mullet and hitting Folly and IOP alternately. Having read up on shrimp, I’m going to try them soon. This kind of fishing is new to me, I was raised on freshwater bass/walleye fishing (no live bait.) I just try to learn more each trip and read as much as I can here.

Thanks for the input Mr. Parker. I have now read up on squid and am thinking that this may be the bait to use. It seems cut squid can catch pretty much anything. I guess I should get a 2nd rod and do one with shrimp and one with squid to see what produces.

Thoughts on squid?

Have never used Squid. Here it’s okay, pretty tough.
