Hey y’all. In a few weeks I’m going to be fishing for some mackerel. I’ve never done this before and I will be doing it from Folly Pier. Can anyone help me out as to what live bait, rigs, or lures to use to catch them?
Thanks for the help in advance.

Honestly I wouldn’t waste my time with it… not a lot of kings normally one or 2 a year but none yet this year. Although my buddy smitty does it smitty123 on here
Fish Myrtle beach, it has deeper water closer to shore which is important for king’s. Make sure you have a trolley rod(large surf rod)and a battle rod(typically a conventional reel, I use a senator 4/0). Use a wire trace with stinger hooks for your leader(make sure it’s long, more shark’s than king’s will take your bait). And one of the best bait’s is a small bluefish. Now your next challenge is deploying the bait. For this you need a trolley rig. You can buy yours but I prefer to make mine, it’s a lot cheaper. Here’s a picture of mine
It consist’s of #10 single strand wire(only use 10, it has the perfect flexibility), snap swivel, a 2oz.+ egg sinker and the leg’s bent at a 45+ angle. I always use a snap swivel and attach the leg’s through the eye of the snap swivel`like this
Basically to get it to the water you attach the snap swivel from the trolley rig to the anchor trolley line. Then you take the legs and stick it through the eye to your leader like in the second picture. This keep’s the bait suspended in the water until a fish takes it(the legs flex) and the battle line is ready to go! I know I made it sound a bit confusing so if you have any questions just reply, inbox me, or facebook me. I hope this helps, others will be able to help your more as they specifically go for king’s. Good fishing and tight lines .
I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.
Agreed with the above, I wouldn’t spend the extra cash fishing for king mackerel on Folly. I’ve been to that pier 100 times and I never once saw a king caught on it on any of those trips. Even spanish are far and few between on the average day.
Great place for small spades, the occasional pompano and redfish, and tons of whiting and well, rays and juvenile sharks.
The fishing off Folly pier is very bad, IMO. When comparing it to any pier in the Gulf Coast, Myrtle Beach, and NE Florida it’s not worth your time.
You can catch the exact same species by fishing from the beach and it’s free.
I’m amazed every time I see people out there King Fishing. It’s basically a waste of time unless you just want to see sharks hit baits on the surface. They catch more Kings in 1 week at any Gulf Coast pier, as they have in about 5 years at Folly.
yep we don’t catch many kings.i wouldn’t say it’s a waste of time.i have made some really good friends out there.it’s good that you think it’s a waste of time though.you’ll met people from different places.i’ve gotten invited on a good many fishing trips from people just visiting.got a friend that comes from oklahoma every year for a week also got a few that comes from michagin.it’s not just about fishing.
2fast92 what are the dates that you’ll be there?i’ll try to make it down then and help you out.i make my own anchors and release clips.
Ok well it was a fish in the pier tournament and I was just wondering how to catch it or what to do. Can y’all tell me what IS caught at Folly Pier and what the best rigs/bait is? Or at least what y’all have used in the past. Thanks.

Sharky - That aspect is not a waste of time at all, but in regards to the # of fish you catch it clearly is.
I know that people make lots of friends and have a close bond with that group of people out there and that’s worth it. Just to be outside with friends and not catching fish is still a relaxing day.
My comment was strictly directed towards the # of King Fish caught.
I have probably king fished off of FB pier a couple of dozen times. Caught many a shark, a couple of spanish, and a ton of bluefish, along with other assorted fish. In that time, I have had 2 king bites. The first one was my fault for losing it, but the second bite was during the kick off tourney last spring. I caught the first king of the year, the only one in that tourney, and also it was my first pier king. I wouldn’t trade all that wasted time for anything. Most folks don’t even like eating kings, or spanish, or bluefish for that matter. I particularly like to eat those fish, and although I like surf fishing a little better, fishing on a pier (any pier) sure as hell beats sitting around at home fishing on the internet. JMHO
