Pier fishing for Spanish

I will be in myrtle beach for a couple of days and plan to do fishing off the surf and pier. I want to try to jig for mackerel but have never jigged before. What would be the best jigging rig to use and how heavy or light of a rod to use. If anyone has some tips on Spanish jigging I would appreciate hearing some.

There’s some videos on youtube. Showing rigs and techniques.

You can do the same with a sabiki rig

Straw rigs with soda straws and gold wire hooks. Google it. Spanish do have teeth A 20# line for your rigs will not get bit off as much as a sabiki. The local regulars will have rod rest that pivot to keep from warring your rod grips out. You can hand hold it and do the same. Just a little more tiring.

I’ve been making these rigs for years. This shows how to make them in detail. I’ll be there next week and hope to do some jigging. I usually use a 14’ Alpha rod but this trip I’m going to use a 15’ Ugly Stik. In the past I have had 5 Spanish on at 1 time but only got 3 of them over the rail.

I’d rather fish than eat.
