pinfish for offshore bottom baits

What the best place around the harbor to load up on pinfish? Any particular tide?
Thanks

Bream buster with small pieces of shrimp around docks has always worked for us.

Sabiki rig tossed right next to the channel buoy just outside the jetty worked for me.

Good stuff. Thanks. Ive heard folks catching them off the old Pitt St pier and Sullians. Just trying to find a spot where they load up.

Could you set a trap out with some frozen chum in it?

I’ve read it’s against the law to trap them! But have never checked it out with DNR

Talked to 3 DNR officers in the same DNR boat out of Georgetown a few weeks ago. All 3 said that as to their knowledge that there is nothing illegal about having or using pin fish traps in SC waters.

“sniff it before you eat it!”

I looked in DNR book & could not find anything either.

And that’s a major flaw in our DNR regulations. I’ve had the same conversations with LEOs in Charleston and have been told the opposite. Laws should be easy to understand. You shouldn’t have to study the law in order to interpret it.

Sabiki and a can of cat food at any marina cleaning station should do it

2X on being told no by DNR. I was told that I would be arrested for using what they called a “fish trap”.

What is the difference between traping them and a mud minnow?

Good point.

I will tell you that I sat on the rocks next the the Shem Creek ramp and absolutely loaded up on pins. Small hook with a tiny piece of shrimp and a cork. The fishing trip that followed, the grouper sure seemed to favor them.

Your not allowed to use a trap with certain size holes and with out the cull out holes that let undersized things swim out. The true pinfish traps have too small of holes and no release hole because all the small pins would swim out. I was told you can get a ticket for having the crab pot without the release hole.

I was told you can throw over bait as long as your not shrimping. So go to your pin fish area throw out some chum and throw the net. This works in creek mouths and flats pockets. But sabik rigs around structure is a go to method. Shrimp drop nets from a dock or pier work also.

They sell pinfish traps at Academy

I actually was referring to selling live pinfish. Might be a good little business for summer work.
