We had some fog in the creek before we got to stono inlet. My Phinstincts and MCMarine’s keen eyes got us into the Stono around 6AM. Somebody was out there right before the skinny water in a catamaran that I couldn’t get on the VHF. They came on through behind me though, so I reckon all was well.
We ran out over a nice little ripple on the water. StretchArmStrong and… that’s right I said Stretch… and KeyWest15 got to catch some ZZZZZZZ’s in the back seats for a while. MCMarine and I discussed snapping and scamping strategies as usual for this time of year. Some mention of other species was mixed in, but it was mostly scamping and snapping…
We pulled up on an area and almost immediately found some good looking stuff, but I worked it a little while we got a plan of attack laid out for them. The plan consisted of using hooks, line and sinkers… and the new Shimano Lucanus jigs…
What is a Lucanus jig? What do they do?
The hooks that came on them are too small, but I understand that it is possible to change them out for bigger ones- MCMarine had a lot of hits, but not as many hookups. Two legal red snapper were caught on the things though…
Stretch put it on us though. I’m talking about a 12-13# ARS while we were catching little 6-8 pounders. And I’m talking about this 18 pounder also.
Keywest15 put a scamp in the box, and we also got a couple rock hinds/graysbys/strawberries before finally, after 30 minutes or so… limiting out on red snapper. We vented and released a half dozen or so and could have caught plenty more. Time to
Don’t know about the rest of you boys, but my hands are sore today and my arms feel like jello! Thanks for a great trip Phin. And thanks for keeping breakfast down Stretch By the way, you forgot to mention the triggers.
Scoutin,
I jumped ahead of P1 early, but it was a short-lived lead. I know they got a few scamp in the morning along with a limit of snapper. Then, they got a couple gags while we were trying to see if the Pioneer would chine walk on the way in.
KeyWest,
Totally forgot about 23Sailfish’s fav. fish to catch… I’m glad you brought that up so he would be assured that we had 5 or 6 in the box. Just trying to make the waters safer for 23SF…
H.O.,
We are going to try and get on the turkey Sat. morning if this rain doesn’t screw it up. Then, I’ve got to get back here for an engagement I am committed to. Hire a photographer for the weekend so I can see what all I missed down there!

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thank you. You are truly a modern day hero. We killed some too.

Will be no picture taking! Too much of a black-mail risk for some of the folks.
Good luck with the birds. I predict perfect weather for gobblin’ on Sat. a.m.

Though I am a beginner and working my way to yall’s kind of catch I too got a good trip on 8-11-08. Went out of Shim Creek to a set of numbers given to me called 122. Got a couple of Snappers some Porgies but keep on catching the Red Porgy and finially stopped because of them. Sure is a low limit to be catching so many. But had a great trip anyway. Hope to catch better and bigger next time.
Oh, and I’ll be the one to say it since Phin is constantly getting ribbed for spamming. That Pioneer DOES ride like a much bigger boat. Also, a while back when someone was trying to say how calm Stono Inlet was and disagreed with Phin when he said it can be breakers all the way across the inlet…Phin was right. You’ll never see a calmer day on the ocean than yesterday and there were in fact breakers all the way across the inlet on the way home.
