For those of you that live for flyfishing the flats, this show is for you. First two episodes have aired, couple of flyfishing legends along with a few celbrities flyfishing for bonefish in the Bahamas on the flats. Fantastic show, certainly worth checking it out early Saturday mornings. I believe it comes on ESPN2 at 0530. And airs again later on in the morning. DVR it.
You guys that are planning the trip to the Bahamas in February, this is exactly what you’re in for. I’m jealous BTW.
Actually 23… this show is ****ing horrible… Bunch of rich dudes, staying at a lodge that none of us could ever afford, being poled around by guides to hundreds of tiny fish…
Hell besides lefty nobody on this show can even cast… oh well, thats TV right?
For those going to the bahamas with me in a few weeks the scene will be ALOT different… Fishing on foot, by yourself with no guide, to big smart fish… drinking beer and crashing in what could be referred to as a “fishing house” with a bunch of foulmouthed salty rejects… My kind of trip…
So, its bad because they have a guide? I don’t get it. I think its a great show. Maybe you’ve seen more episodes than I have. The show I watched also talks a lot about conservation efforts and what they are doing to protect the bonefish so that future generations can enjoy the same experiences…Maybe you are OUTsane!

I say its well worth a watch."
Perhaps I should reword my response… Its not a “bad” show… The entire concept and the way it is pulled off is pretty lame though.
I’m guessing you’ve never been to the bahamas… or at least never bonefished there… Bonefishing the way these guys are doing it, would be like driving to the mountains, paying a **** ton of money for one of those cabins up on the hilltop, and fishing in a stocked pond for a week, then filming it, talking about conserving the environment, and dubbing it a “Great troutfishing Adventure!!”
Catching a 3lb bone in the bahamas is about as hard as catching VD on sprull ave. Especially if you have someone behind you tying on your flies and pointing the fish out to you…
They talk about conservation? Once again they are in the Bahamas, those fish are not endangered at all… no commercial fishery, and every island there that has em has figured out how to market them and make money… bonefish are rockstars… they’re just fine… If they’re worried about conservation they should go to venezuela or some other 3rd world country where the fish are still havested…
And staying in a multimillion dollar resort that probably hacked down acres of mangrove nursery habitat to exist is a great way to support the conservation of the islands… (ive been going to the islands since 1992… ive seen what money and resorts has done down there… and none of its good)
Look I say cool, if you wanna watch it thats fine… but for the amount of money and the caliber of people they have at their bidding… they copped out and did a half ass job…
Just my .02… keep watching it if it makes ya happy bro…
23, I’m with you. I thought it was a good show. I employ the services of a guide when I visit the tropics. I do this because I hope to have exactly the quality of fishing that these guys experienced. I think I understand your stance MM, if I worked in the business and had a destination dialed in as you seem to have in the Bahamas, I would do the same thing. There is nothing more rewarding than having a successful trip using your own skill, knowledge and equipment! I don’t get to travel to the tropics but once or twice a year and it’s not a dedicated fishing trip so I like to maximize my fishing experience and chances. I consider the price and company of a good guide for a day money well spent! On a second note, I don’t think the conservation message was specific to the Bahamas, but to the species in general. I feel sure the location chosen was due to the abundance of fish and vastness of open hard bottom flats which I feel sure made it easier for the film and support crews. This show, however anyone feels about it, will reach a lot of people and that can only be good for the species. JMHO. Cheers, Mike
if you let someone stand behind you and mess with your fly you dont have to be on spruill to catch something. <{:o]> was that the show with tom brokaw?
Just to be clear, I’m not bashing them for using guides… i’m a guide for god’s sake… If you got the money go for it, it definately makes life and fishing alot easier… What upsets me is that this is where fishing shows are going now. These are supposed to be the primo fishermen in the country?? These are the people that are representing the sport??
I just sit down and wonder what happened to the good ole days. Flip had it right… yeah he could go on a little too much with the poetic waxing sometimes but he was a real fisherman, fishing with other real fishermen… (yes I know they were guides) and the camera was just a side note… there to document…
This butt pirates of the flats shows watches like a ****ing infomercial, and its more about stroking the egos of those involved than helping the fish… I mean listening to Brokaw makes me want to stab myself with a blunt object… and the dudes doing the most yappin’ are the least experienced fishermen in the whole bunch…
And Lefty… don’t get me started on him… that dood has sold his soul… I know he wrote the book, litterally and figuratively, and I would never call any of his acomplishments into question for he really is one of the best fishermen we will likely ever whitness in our lifetimes… but jesus… this is how the next generation is gonna know him… its really just sad…
You give that same amount of money to some of the up and coming filmakers out there that are producing these new fishing films… put them in a primetime spot… and I bet money they change the game for the better… only problem is, the almighty dollar is the only way to get on the tube… and you would have to find a company with enough balls to put the heart and sould of the sport ahead of the profitability of it…
I find myself partially agreeing with everyone here. I think the show is OK, the filming is a bit uninspired, and the location pretty lame (well as lame as anywhere in the Bahamas could be). As MM mentioned the Marls are known for being home to millions of small easy fish, a great place to guide or get your bonefish skunk off I’m sure. But they’re are dozens of better locations throughout the Bahamas they could have chosen.
And while I like to hire a guide from time to time, I prefer the glory of figuring it out myself and the Bahamas are great for that as well. The best thing about this show, for me, is that somebody on tv is actually picking up a flyrod again! When was the last time you saw that? Jose refuses to go near the flats anymore and when he does hucks the meat stick (The Show’s called Spanish FLY???) Tom Rowland is a casting champion and all last season he may have picked up the hippie stick once…I just wish they would go back to fly fishing a little more, so at least it was nice to see that.
I agree with ya Chuck but I am kinda sick of all the TV shows, 1 for ignoring the fly fishing world and 2 I could really care less where people who have tons of money and can drop $20,000 on a “trip” and go to where ever… I agree wiht Mike, give some of that money to the local guys and let them show us #1 HOW it’s done and #2 where average Joe can go and do the same… It’s all about the money and sponsors and keeping them happy promoting thier brand… no one really gives a crap about the fishing… I mean really… These guys make so much money I doubt they really care about the art anymore… hey get paid wether they fish or not…
My question is “Why would these so-called ‘pirates’ want to make a fishing show?”
What is the point? An actor and a news guy to fishing with a guide…yawn. I hate actors.
was down there in Abaco and I tell ya I can only afford a guide about one or maybe 2 days out of a week when I go fishing abroad, I went once guided in the Marls and caught a bunch of small dumbass bones there, I certainly would not trade all the bones in the marls for the large tricky-as-hell bones I stuck on my own around Cherokee sound, and point of spit, plus imo wading to bones is sooo much better than riding the bow, haven’t seen the show, I actually talk to Lefty about a month after he filmed this (@ troutfest in Tn) He said they got awful weather which may have affected it? will watch but kinda agree with MM, dem expensive lodges are nice I am sure but i’d rather be in that fishin house with a case of beer and a bottle a rum.
I think I’ll pitch a show to Bonefish Tarpon Trust about some pack of Jersey Shore, budweiser fueled, DIY fly rodders held up on some “secret flat” with a HD flip camera and see how it goes. Could be good as gold as what the hell does Lefty, Yvon Chouinard, Thomas McGuane or Val Atkinson know about fishing, casting, film or especially conservation? I for one hate listening to well educated people talk and would rather just watch fish porn.
All hail The Drake film festival only 8+/- weeks. There will be no jibber jabber in these films.
