Heading to Mt. Pleasant in 2 weeks and looking forward to hitting the Beach with my new 12 foot setup. I usually fish off of one of the peirs but am looking forward to surf fishing this trip.
What places should I try and what type of tackle (hooks, lead, etc)

You definitely want go to check out Bulls Bay up 17N. They’ve got a small bait shop there where you can pick up just about everything you need, depending on the fish you’re after. It’ll be on the other side of the ferry.
If you’re going to be in Mt p, it’ll be a lot closer to just go to hadrells or Charleston angler then head out to isle of palm or Sullivans…you’re liable to catch anything out there. Keep climbing the food chain and you should have something to help break in your 12’er! Shrimp-whiting-shark…pretty standard progression this time of year.
Good luck!

If you are fishing the surf you want to use either a double drop rig or a fish finder rig. I use fluorocarbon leader for the rigs. I attach a swivel to my braid mainline using a palomar knot. Then tie the leader to the swivel, I use a clinch knot for this. This site shows a good example of a fish finder rig. http://www.onthewater.com/three-surf-rigs-every-surfcaster-should-know-about/ The weight goes on a sinker slide which you can buy at Haddrells - along with weight, leader, swivels, hooks, etc. This site also shows an example of a double drop rig (they call it a high low rig). A better example, with instructions for tying dropper loops is here: http://www.spacecoastoutdoors.net/Fishing_Surf_Feature_Tackle.htm I like to tie an end loop at the bottom for the weight. This allows you to switch weights with out re-tying.
I generally fish double drops with small hooks, between #2 and 2/O. Usually 2-3oz pyramids weights will hold the surf, sometimes I go up to 4oz. If 4oz wont hold, I go home. I fish small pieces of fresh, not frozen, shrimp for bait. With the fish finder rig I usually go a bit larger, 2/0 hooks with pieces of fresh, not frozen, mullet for bait. Unless you are targeting sharks, this setup should work for you. There are other guys on here who are the experts on targeting sharks and shark set ups. Since you are going to be in Mt Pleasant, I would assume you are going to fish the surf at Isle of Palms or Sullivans. If you are looking for spots to fish there, PM me, and I will give you some places to try.
So… big Ugly stick=heavy. … and no fish yet
