Pomp up the jam

Don’t get to surf fish nearly as much as I’d like now that we have 2 young children, but I have been after a good pompano for years now. Dad raised me fishing in the surf, and I still remember the last couple we caught and grilled probably 20 years ago. They are just as delicious as I remember!

Beautiful fish!
What is the herb?
What was the bait?

Anyone know if the Pomps are around Folly pier? Looking to do something on Father’s day but I know the beaches will be crazy busy.

Nice looking Pompano Barbawang, glad you got to bring back a few memories of fishing with your pop. I like the whole roasted fish, have you ever tried to do it with a red, and did it come out tasty as well ?

great post

Thanks all

Bait was shrimp I caught in the folly late last fall, marked the quarts of small tails and use them for bait when not for pasta. I always peel mine, that was a #1 j hook, short 30lb leader and 1oz pyramid on slider. Caught stingrays, ladyfish, whiting, red drum, black drum, seatrout, and the pomp Saturday, from 2oz whiting to 10lb red, everything eats shrimp!

Lemons, onions, dill from the garden, evoo, s&p. 375 for 25mins for 2lb whole weight, ate it 7hrs out of the ocean with wild rice pilaf = kickass

RBR, I have cooked whole black drum and steelhead salmon, both pretty much the same way as this fish and they all turned out great. Never done a red, always fillet and usually grill or fry them. Don’t think you could go wrong though, I wanna see you try smoking a whole redfish too!

Digger, you never know till you go!

Nice I like to see how little you waste. Respect.

LOL, that’s priceless…

May all your favorite bands stay together…

phin has the grouper dance, I got my pomp stomp

funny how the good fish always hits when you’re occupied, I was putting on sunscreen, reel seat got all kinds of slippery during that fight.

40", the final appearance of that fish wasn’t worth a picture- the dog enjoyed the heck out of that pile of skin, I ate the crunchy parts of the fins, then the bits of meat off the fin bones, and then the skeletonized remains went back in my bait creek the next day along with 3 filleted whiting and 1 seatrout to feed the minnows, crabs, and shrimp. my daughter even thanked the pompano before eating it… the great circle we are all so lucky to be riding

PS check out that rip behind me, as soon as I pulled up I knew where I wanted to fish… wish I had been there 2 hours earlier, dropped straight off the bar to 6’ and then made a pretty little eddy in clear green water, looked like there should be bonefish swimming by!

I know that spot…nice catch buddy…
