Well, long story short, I’ve been offered a job in Charleston making a little more money than I do now. My problem is trying to decide if this is a good move or not. Seeing the other post about moving to Charleston made me wonder if anyone else out there has been in my shoes or similar…
I am born and raised in the Greenville SC. Once married, built a house and moved roughly 100 yds away from the home place. Never lived anywhere else. The wife and I love Charleston and visit it frequently. The eyes we look through are ones of being tourist. The hard decision I’m having is this a wise move or not. We have no family down there as they are all up here, but do have friends. I would bet family would move down eventually to see the new grand child.
Just having a hard time deciding. I’m a creature of habit and don’t like changes…but then again…it is Charleston.
Move…besides, think how many people on this site you will make jealous:imp:

All of the outlying places around Charleston have a completely different feel to them. Might want to narrow down what your looking for.
I’d not move anywhere in Charleston but James Island…

I’ve moved a few times. Moving away from home is the toughest and can be the best thing you ever do. The safety net is gone, so you have to build your own network.
I spent 7 years in Easley, 2 in Ocala, FL, and the past 6 in Summerville. Charleston is great, but I like being a bit inland. I probably would’ve bought a little closer to the water if it didn’t fall outside of my commute to work circle.
Where would you be working? Talk to a lot of folks before you make the decision. Don’t be in a huge hurry to buy a house unless you’re already really familiar with the + and - of different locales.

It sounds to me like you don’t like change. That would make you right at home here in Charleston, we hate change. They say it takes 100 Charlestonions to change a lightbulb. One to change it and the other 99 to talk about how great the old one was. That aside Greenville isn’t that far away and Charleston is a great place to live. Don’t worry about family or support, you have the guys on this forum. People on this forum are incredibly supportive and help each other out all the time. So come on down!

I don’t even know you and already don’t like you.
Can’t tell you whether to move or not. As a Navy brat, we moved all the time. I was always envious of people who had lived in the same place all their lives. I would move to get closer to salt but that’s just me.

I moved here from the York County area 11 years ago to finish my B.A, and then went to Raleigh for my master’s, and just returned a year ago. I despised living in the shadow of Charlotte. I don’t even like driving through Charlotte. I wasn’t crazy about Raleigh but it was a nice place. Just boring as heck to me.
Charleston has FAR FAR more character and culture than Greenville (although Greenville is a nice place). You aren’t going to improve any on traffic problems (we got’em), the humidity is going to be a bit more, and you have more risk of hurricanes.
But.
Good saltwater and freshwater fishing. Shrimping. Crabbing. Nice beaches. Boating galore. Downtown Charleston. BEST eating restaurants in the North and South Carolina line-up. Far more wildlife diversity (ie, life is just more interesting when you get 35 tree frogs on your back porch every time it rains, and they jump on your wife when she walks by).
I am partial to the Summerville/Goose Creek area but it can be a long haul if your job is in the James Island or Mt. Pleasant area. If it’s in North Charleston, just stay close to the interstate.

I dont recall ever meeting anyone that moved to the Charleston area and wished that they had not.

Hey, you know we have that little “apt” out back…
Born and raised in Charleston, moved up to Greenville for the wife, and miss Charleston every day! I say move!

No Brainer… Last time I checked, the fishing was a lot better in Charleston as opposed to Greenville.
Depends on what you fish for. Greenville is close to some great mountain fly fishing…just sayin. If you are struggling this much with the decision it sounds like you will miss home. I love the low country. Half of my family got off the boat in Chucktown 200 years ago. That being said home is home, and I wouldn’t want to uproot and move away from my hometown of Charlotte.
I’m making the move from Spartanburg to Charleston at the beginning of September for my job…just in time for shrimp season! I grew up in Spartanburg, but ended up having to spend some time as a patient at MUSC and now it feels kind of like home. I’m looking forward to seeing what it has to offer.
I lived most of my life in Mauldin/Simpsonville area. Worked and tried to make Greenville a home. I hate to burst your and other upstater folks bubble but Greenville sucks ass, possibly worse than Columbia. I’d move and never look back. When we have to leave the lowcountry and head back towards Greenville, my blood pressure goes up 10-20 points.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Is this really a question? That’s like asking, “Hey should I rather get a kick to the face by a black belt, or a back massage by a beautiful woman?”
Greenville is more like a kick in the balls.
