Possible Job move to Charleston..Questions

Not sure how much of a raise is involved…but obviously you need to consider the “cost of living” for Charleston versus Greenville. I don’t know any specifics but I am sure its substantially more expensive to live in Charleston versus Greenville.

That said if it was even a lateral move paywise…I would take Charleston any day over Greenville.

Thanks to everyone who’s given honest opinions about my post. I’ve talked to everyone I know that lives in Charleston as well as seen what you all have to say…and believe this is an opportunity I should persue. Aside from leaving family, I have no true ties to the Greenville area. In my research and trying to make a decision, the issue of increased cost comes up alot. Greenville vs. Charleston cost of living seems to run higher, but mow much? With the average US cost being 100, Greenville is 93 and Charleston is 110.

I’ll keep you posted on the success. If we can make it work, a big ol’ CF get together will be in order. Thanks again.

I will say, in my breif travels through Greenville, their stretch of Interstate is much better maintained than ours here in Charleston. It’s a shame the way the medians and sides are kept here. Trash, weeds, overgrown grass.

This info may be helpfull concerning cost of living.

It dosen’t mention homeowners(flood) insurance, depending on the area, that could be much higher.

FWIW, I left home for greener pastures when I was 23 (30 years ago). My entire family - parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents - lived in the same county. I would do it again. There were pros and cons of course, but I think it was good for me to go from being a “somebody” to being just another face in the crowd. I had to figure a lot of things out on my own and couldn’t rely on my friends and family to smooth things out and make things easier for me. I think I am a better man because of it.

I want to move to either Charleston or Jacksonville so bad now that I can barely think about anything else. But my wife doesn’t want to move from Atlanta so I am stuck for now. I’ll keep talking to my wife about it every few months…wish me luck. The thought of spending the rest of my life in Atlanta…let’s just say it’s not my happy place. I am envious of your position.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

We live just northeast of Columbia, in Camden, and while we adore living on 115 acres with virtually no neighbors, unlimited hunting, decent pond fishing, horseback riding…I’d move to Charleston in a skinny minute. We have several friends that have moved there in the past cpl years, and have yet to hear a complaint. One day…one day, we’ll be there

Cost of living??? Charleston is DIRT CHEAP!!! Price of cocktail on south beach = $20. Price of cocktail in Charleston = $8. That’s how I measure cost of living.

Maybe Greenville is dirtier and cheaper, but by no means is Charleston expensive on the grand scale.

Well… relatively speaking, a mixed drink is probably around $6 in Greenville so there is a difference. If your on budget like my family is… these are valid considerations when you’re making such a big decision. On a whole I agree Charleston is cheap when you compare it to other parts of the country. I was just saying its something to consider.

If the guy is taking a modest pay increase to move to Charleston versus Greenville, I would venture to say it would be like taking a modest pay cut. Having said that…I think the quality of life would make up for it ten fold.

I wouldn’t say Greenville is dirtier either. Greenville is a great place with lots going on. Charleston has them beat on heritage, coastal atmosphere and fishing websites, but Greenville has a lot of positives.

I graduated high school in Greenville (Wade Hampton) in 1990 and I can tell you I could not get out of there quick enough…after the College of Charleston I moved back to Greenville and lived from 1997 - 2003…Greenville had changed (and was still changing) more than one could have imagined…downtown was finally a destination again, the West End was being cleaned up…and now Greenville has many wonderful facets to offer…she will never have the charm of Charleston, but I think it is def a place worth visiting now…and I’m not ashamed anymore to say I lived there

For what its worth, I wasn’t a big Charleston fan at first. I grew up in Horry County. Yeah I know. Bring on the dirty south jokes, redneck Riviera, etc.

However, I worked in Charleston for 2 years and drove back and forth home a few days a week. I hated Charleston. Traffic, beaches, cost, etc.

Then I had to relocate the family to Columbia. Been there for 4 years now, and lets just say I would take Charleston back in a skinny minute. The upstate SUCKS! My only saving grace is Lake Murray, and the fact that I still get to work in Charleston during the week sometimes and fish IOP. If I lived in Greenville, I would bolt to the coast.

Born/ raised Birmingham AL. Moved here almost 14 yrs ago. Alone, no friends, no family, no job. Just loved the idea of trying Charleston out. I will never leave. I have made many friends. Found success in my business life. Met my wife here. Married her in Hampton Park. We are now raising our daughter here. My only regret is my parents not getting to see my daughter as much as they would both like.

I will add Birmingham has turned into a great town but I’m not going back. I love it here.

If you like shopping at Heyward Mall and being stuck in traffic to go eat at a restaurant on Woodruff Road…stay in Greenville.

If you like having access to beaches, endless miles of boating opportunities, tons of free things to do on almost any weekend, oyster roasts, bbq’s, great food, historic places to visit, sunsets watching dolphins play at The Boathouse Restaurant or Reds on Shem Creek, watching tourist downtown with amusement, beer, wine and liquor sales on Sunday…move to Charleston.

Toughy, ain’t it.

Well it depends on how you measure quality of life. Money isn't everything. I almost walked out the door on my former employer to take a 40% pay cut to move from Charlotte to Charleston. Yes, I said 40 PERCENT. Don't care who you are or how much you make, that's a significant change. Honestly, I wasn't sure how I was going to make ends meet after a move like that, but I was so unhappy I would have done anything to get out of there.

What stopped me from quitting? They caved in and let me move back and work remotely!!! I got lucky and got the best of both worlds. I was serious and had actually submitted my resignation to my second

I wouldn’t move here. It sucks…the people are rude and there is no fun to be had unless you like to sweat yourself to death outside in the humidity and fight off disease carrying mosquitos. I wouldn’t even visit as a tourist.
Just my 2 cents

Moved from South Florida to Greenville in 8th grade. Then lived there for a year after college before moving to Charleston.

For what its worth I would never consider moving back.

You would not regret the move.

Bonzo beer. Best deal in town. They pay you to drink it.

I am curious, what was wrong/"bad" about Charlotte? Or did it just not suit your lifestyle?

Too far from the ocean. My heart was in Charleston. I just drove down to Charleston every weekend with the hopes that I could get offshore (weather permitting).

Also, when I lived there from 1998-2005, it was more or less a big sausage party and that is not good for a single guy looking to meet the ladies.

That makes complete sense. Money can’t buy everything!
