Pretty good day

The dog and I headed out for first time since catching our lemon. It was a pretty good day. We caught some fresh mullet in the cast net and headed out, she enjoys fishing just as much as I do if not more. Fished just after low tide looking for a nice shark and found right off the bat fish were hitting hard so changed gear to fish rigs immediately, turned out to be a good decision. The tally of day was one nice trout, one nice blue, handful of good size whiting, a lady fish, a giant ray, one shark run that bite through mono and no reds for a long time. Mr Parkers advice on letting ray sit with slack line worked beautifully -thanks . Not to be denied a red we pushed on and finally landed one three and a half hours later and he was a decent one measured at 33 inches. Reds can be caught during the summer if you want them bad enough, spent a total of five hours and was thankful to be fishing with my buddy grace the dog. Trout was16 and blue was 15 and half. The red marks on tape measure are 16 inches not a foot. Note blues tail not on zero.

Great haul!

Just out of curiosity, did you get those mullet from the beach or elsewhere?

I have had great luck with frozen mullet, but I want to up my game a bit. I’ve never used a cast net, but I figure since I fish so often it’s time to invest in one.

The fish took to the fresh mullet real good, the fresh stuff stays on hook better and they like it more, caught them in a marsh before going to a beach, but you can catch bait from beach sometimes in cast net. The net pays for itself quick. If you cant catch with net its good to have a backup or your whole day could be ruined if you have no luck catching bait. I always bring a little shrimp or squid just in case.

Sounds like a perfect outing! VERY nice haul! I have been out of town the past 4 weekends  'bout to go nuts! And the Reds will start to move in and out of the surf this month. Next month?..If the water temp drops some they will be more prevelant. And of course Oct.-Feb.??? Well you know, It gets cold…days get short…foggy mornings…no pretty girls on the beach to get in your way…and no Sharks! [:0] You guys don’t want to fish that crap! [:I] So stay home, drink lots and lots of beers by the fire, if you’re in school study hard, watch some FOOLSBALL or NASCAR what ever, I’ll take up the slack. :stuck_out_tongue: Black Drum bananzas begin in October.

Great report runbaby, I may be able to get out next weekend. Too early to tell though.

I was hoping to see a picture of the dog!

Hey, dparker. Just so you know I will be doing ALL of those things every weekend here shortly. No slack for you. Two fantasy leagues, school, lots of beer, and I will still be hitting that beach every weekend.

Seriously, I’m looking forward to it. I will try to save some fish for the rest of you.

October is a good shark month. Last year the last one I got was nov 18th and it was a fatty sandbar. Keep at it boys.

So I’ll see you for a Stingray roundup or two in Feb.? Be sure to bring your waders, water is a bit chilly then. And for sure NO sharks.
