Project ReSpeck

Good afternoon - There have been a few threads about how can we help our fisheries rebound after the January cold snap. Some of that discussion revolved around increased stocking efforts and how most of us would be willing to pay more for a fishing license if it ended up in more fish released by DNR, etc.

I’m proud to announce an initiative that can address this in a tangible way. I was approached by Joel Levine of Redfin Charters at the Haddrell’s Expo and we pulled in Daniel Nussbaum at Z-Man. Conservation and sustainability are really important to all of us and he pitched an idea to us about setting up a way to raise money that could somehow be used directly for stocking, not sent to some general fund. After a lot of hard work, phone calls, etc by Joel who has done the lion’s share of the work, we have ended up with a non-profit entity called the Community and Professional Response Initiative (CPR) which we will use to raise and direct funds to projects aligned with the mission, the first of which is one we are calling Project ReSpeck.

DNR has said the most pressing need is another spawning tank at their Fort Johnson facility, and the cost is $25k. So, our goal is to raise funds to purchase the tank which is capable of producing 600,000-ish eggs per year to provide fish to stock.

Z-Man, Eye Strike, and Redfin have put some up-front money behind it to kick things off, with an initial donation of $2,500. We are also all going to donate a portion of our sales to contribute to the fund during the year as well.

We ask you to please help meet the goal by making a donation of any size. How can you contribute?

Go to www.projectrespeck.com

This will send you to a landing page for the CPR initiative with instructions to either contribute by credit card or check. You will receive a letter with your tax free donation in the mail within a short amount of time.

Thanks and please let me or any of us know if you have any questions. FYI, none of our businesses profit off this initiative in

I’m in.

Thank you for posting and helping get this rolling Dave. I know many people have expressed an eagerness to help donate in some way to the fishery and this is awesome that everyone knows exactly where their contribution will be going. As a community we can have a direct impact on the future of our fisheries through our personal conservation and now through this.

Great work by great people!

Donation inbound…

Very cool Claim

I agree with all you said, except the idea that you don’t profit from this initiative. Of course you do; you sell fishing lures and guide trips. The truth is, though, we will all profit from this cause. Others sell lures and charters, ice, boats, gas, trucks, etc. Our trout fishery is one of the most valuable resources in our state. It keeps some of us out of other trouble; it even helps us keep our young folks off their cel phones. The State of South Carolina ought to send you a check for $25,000. Make that $250,000.
And don’t ever apologize for making a profit!

From what I’ve heard redfish is our number 1 sport fish and trout are number 2 and a lot of money is produce from them as well as jobs. I figured some one with the abilities to get something going would STep up. Well done, and thanks to y’all for doing so. Next CPR should work on something for redfish.

I just donated the minimum of 25 not a lot of extra funds in the non savings or bill portion of my check right now (car repairs got me this time) but it helps and i’ll donate again.

40 think of how many people fish. If just 1,000 of them do what you just did. The goal is met. We have many more than that fishing here. Great job.

Can you get the donation part to accept Pay Pal?

Let’s go for two tanks. What areas will be getting fish?

On something like this whats the chance of lobbying with our Government and claiming a State disaster and getting some Federal money brought in after creel studies are done this April? We’ll need hard core evidence of a major kill off and then some good lobbyists.

Fred I am not sure about the PayPal thing, maybe Dave has some info on that. I like the two tank attitude, I also like the fact that we are not relying on Gov’t. Money for this. That is what makes it most appealing to me,

Agreed! The minute you get politicians involved, they will want to take point and that’ll lead to nowhere but failure. This should be strictly about the fishery and not a photo op or PR stunt for a politician’s re-election/self-promotion campaign.

I’m still leary of using credit cards online… I just like the security using pay pal. I do keep one just for online purchases with a very low limit. I’ll support this with a donation.

Thanks so much everyone. Claim, that is an awesome gesture. Ed worked for us at Eye Strike and was a dear friend of ours. Realfin, you’re right everyone in the fishing industry benefits from a great fishery. My point was that I didn’t want people to think that by donating you are directly padding our pockets because that’s not the case. We hope that people think of this as a tool to directly help where it matters. So when WE meet the goal we can all be proud of it.

The exciting thing is that the CPR fund is bigger than project Respeck. We may very well turn to a cause benefitting redfish once we meet this goal.

Once again, thank you all for your support. Really.
