What kind of puffers are there around here? I keep catching the ■■■■ things and the hook is almost always swallowed. Are there some kind of near shore reefs around here or something? I catch them all the time at breach if that helps but have caught them everywhere else including the harbor.
I think the kind around here are Northern Puffer. I’ve caught them at Folly Pier and off of Daniel Island in the Wando. One guy at the Wando pier filleted one and threw it in his ice chest. One I caught Saturday kept puffing up and clamping his teeth, making it extremely difficult to get the hook out.

yeah they are a pain and plus you don’t even know you have a fish. I always think I’m reeling in seaweed.
quote:They may be a pain and put up little fight but Northern Pufferfish (Called Blowfish up North) are delicious. Make a cut behind the head thru the back bone, pull out the piece of meat by grabbing it and turning the skin inside out. Clean off any silver skin. It looks like a chicken leg. Roll em in Bake and Shake, bake em and eat em like buffalo wings. Cant be beat. You will need about 6 to 8 good size ones (8"'s or better) per person. Oh yea, wear gloves if you clean up a bunch of them. If you dont you'll know why you should have the next day.

Don’t eat puffers.
Puffers, also known as Fugu in Japan, is a high priced delicacy. Some species can be lethal if not prepared correctly. Read this link before trying to eat one.

F*** THAT! People die and still eat that ****!
I have caught and eaten too many Northern Puffers (Blowfish) to count. The key word here is Northern Puffer! Prior to my post someone said that Northern Puffer is the variety of puffer you were catching. They are greenish on top and sides, yellow and brown highlights, white on their bellies, buck teeth, and blow up when you rub their bellies and grind their teeth when you remove the hook. When you cut into them there is a piece of meat running from the top of the head to the tip of the tail. Thats the ONLY FLESH in the entire fish. On Long Island where I lived most of my life the markets sold these Blowfish under the market name Sea Squab or Chicken of the Sea. Maybe you can check with “SellsFish” & he can set the record straight. He’s a Market Pro. I would never attempt to put false info in a post that could potentially harm anyone. Northern Puffers are not the Fugi fish from Japan. Thats just silly. If your uncomfortable at the thought of eating these fish, thats understandable. Check it out with a fish monger first. If you are uncertain that the Blowfish in question is a Northern Puffer then error on the side of caution. I cleaned and ate my first Blowfish when I was about 10 years old. I’m now 53 and as I said I’ve eaten too many to count.
Maybe these links will calm some nerves.

I was stuck living in NJ for a few years recently (company had me up there - hostage) and they DO catch, filet (all be it tiny I think), and eat the ‘puffers’ up there. If memory serves me, they sold them in grocery/fish markets up there too. I never personally ate them (flounder/tuna/blue/mahi mahi kinda guy), but those fish always made me laught to catch. They’re almost cartoon like… I used to go with a guy off of Long Beach island NJ and they’re ALL OVER the place (hence chicken of the sea) and you catch them and they sometimes will swell up and they just sit there and float on the top of the water before deflating and diving back down…
We always tossed them back as we were really going for Fluke and Blues and such… I originally started fishing at the FB Pier around 1998 ish when my 10 yr old was first born (minus the 4 year sentence in NJ of course) and I’ve never saw one caught at Folly but I’ve heard guys talk about catching them and I am sure they’re there. I’ve always wanted to see one to see how much different they may be than the yellow-ish ones up north we used to catch.
All my FUGU banter was in fun. Sorry if anyone found it offensive. Personally. I wouldnt eat any Fugu looking fish, but thats just me.
Cheers
