Pulling in to a good looking spot!!

It knocks me out when I see a boat pull up to a spot to fish and the anchor puller slings the anchor 10 feet in the air.Do they really think any thing living is now in that area?:smiley: I saw a guy last trip out motor up to a dock and make a tidel wave throwing out the anchor and with his rig still moving.Went in to close to the spot and cranked up again and pulled in the anchor moved 10 feet and threw it out again.I was about 4 docks away waiting for the scared fish to run my way :smiley:About 30 minutes later they roared out of that spot and went across the river.Again the big wave and plop.LOL People cut the motor and drift in to a spot.Be real quiet and have a great fishing trip.

It’s fun to watch… from a distance

Yeah, those are the same people who wonder why they can’t catch any fish. Some people just shouldn’t own boats! It’s bad enough to see a rookie fisherman do it, but what I really hate is when you’re on a good drop catching fish and the game warden blasts up to you at full speed to check your license and fish, throws a 3’ wake over the drop, then blasts off again. Fishing is over, might as well move.

It is terrible when the see you catch a fish, roll up on you, then heave the anchor out.

Good stuff, Joe. Your post made me laugh out loud…

So Joe how do you suggest for us (who do not have power poles) anchor our boats?

Try easing the anchor down real quiet, don’t drop it, don’t chunk it, just ease it in slow and gentle. No splash, no rattle, don’t let the chain run over the side of the boat…stealthly, pretend like you’re deer hunting. You will catch more fish.

Use a Cajun anchor. After trying it out once I don’t know how I ever fished without it. Just my. 02

What’s a Cajun anchor?

There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.

you would think that all the fish would leave with all the commotion. And, they usually do. However, the other day i was fishing in a creek and was sitting a few feet from shore using the trolling motor to hold my position. I was casting a cork n scrimp to the other bank and catching trout. Got two and then a boat passing thru the creek had to go right where i was catching the fish. I was blocking the rest of the creek the way i had my boat positioned. I was like, “dang man, that’s the end of this spot.” I was casting out once more just to see and wham, got another and then another. i was kind of shocked really. Then three more boats did the same thing but the fish never left. I mean they drove right on top of them too. It was right before dark and all the folks that live on that creek were coming back to their docks. I do see how the fish would be more used to boats passing thru than a 25 lb pointed piece of metal coming down from the sky though.

I sat at wappoo cut for a half hour one day on a moon tide last year watching from my boat and laughing. it was great! one guy manages to get his 33 ft grady turned backwards with the motors almost on the trailer while trying to drive it onto the trailer forward. Another guy pulled his boat out w/o tilting up the motor and mangled up the lower unit. While launching his boat,a guy backed the trailer so far down the ramp at low tide that the tires went off the concrete and got stuck in the mud. I mean stuck good. I told him to use his electric anchor to pull the back of the trailer up and the other guy to ease the truck forward. He said that the anchor did not work. It took all of his buddies in the water lifting and some guys pulling with ropes from another bo

Fish that live in high traffic areas I guess realize all that mess is no threat to them.I fish the ICW and those Snow birds throw out some mean wakes at times. The wakes crash on the banks and turn over lots of bottom. The reds feed on what is turned over, crabs, minnows, shrimp.Want to find reds on the ICW.look at dead low tide at the marsh. If you see areas where the marsh is black and has a wall that reaches from the grass to the flat area that’s where you will find the reds.Usually those areas are where you will find no trash to hang up your carolina rigs.Part of the marsh due to wave action has fallen away leaving that wall and a clean flat areas below it.Put a crab chunk next to that wall and hang on.Ease your anchor in and be as quiet as possible.

What optiker said,

That’s still how I do it. But I’ve got a buddy, probably catches more than I do but He still just grabs the anchor and chunks it out with that big splash that makes my skin crawl and just know every fish from 100 yards are on the run. I have to admit we catch fish, figure as the tide is changing if your in your “spot” ahead of time it shouldn’t matter.

I don't do it. I even my friend wouldn't if we had other fishers near by.

working hard and playing harder

I’ve never understood the mentality of throwing the anchor as far as you can from where you stop the boat:question: It almost seems like driving a car close to a parking place then pushing it in the rest of the way. Dang, just run the boat to where you want the anchor to be and ease it over the side. Even 30 miles offshore I’ve seen people throw the anchor with all their heart. A 10kg claw anchor and 30’ of chain and they are throwing it like it’s going somewhere:question:

For shallow inshore fishing I haven’t used an anchor since stake out sticks were invented. Much quieter, cleaner and positions the boat better.

Very true with that fishing style, but when you are trying to ease up on the fish in their spot, then it matters. On a windy day in big water and a lot of boat traffic, it probably doesn’t matter at all, but in a quiet creek it makes a lot of difference.

Yakman - A cajun anchor is a poor man’s power pole. Bout a 5’ piece of SS with a ring on top. Tie on some line and drop or lightly throw into mud bottom. Will hold a 20’ boat in up to about 8-10’ of water. Have also used 2, one off bow, one off stern for ‘one pole’ shrimping. Get them in right and your boat won’t move more than a few inches! Cost about $75.

I use a grounding rod from Lowes with a rope tied to the end for the bow. Works really well and really cheap.

I can afford a power pole, but given how well a cajun anchor works and the price difference, I can’t justify. I have 2 cajun anchors that will keep the boat in perfect position. Anyone that doesn’t understand the concept of easing a loud azz anchor in the water just don’t understand fishing.
