I don’t know if this is anything I can afford to do, but I’m little tired of fighting my boat…motor. It runs great wide open, it runs good at all speeds except slow. I want to go slow sometimes. Especially around docks, boat trailers, ramps and places where control and maneuverability is important.
How do you find a good used motor, what do you look for, who is good at placing an existing motor.

I just repowered a 19’ skiff with a used 03 or 04 115 Yamaha With around 300 hrs Cost was 5k for the motor. Another 700 for new side controls, shifting and throttle cables, gas tanks lines and fittings, fuel water separator, nav lights and a battery. I did it in 2 days a day to strip and a day to put it back together. I’m guessing it’s 800-1k to have some one else do the work
I aimed for a 4 stroke with low hrs and looked high and low for what I wanted at my budget price. I’d say figure out what you want. then start searching and repower when the deal is right.

Where’d you look to find the motor. I wouldn’t mind a motor with more hours if it was solid. I’d love a 4 stroke, although I would miss the no-see-um repelling fog from my old motor.

I looked every where from eBay to Craigslist to calling different shops, trader papers etc. I found it at Charleston marine on rivers. And I’m sure they would be more then happy to do the swap For you as well.
Call around the local boat shops and ask them to keep a look out. They do re-powers all the time for rich folks, which allows us poor folks to get a good deal on some solid equipment.
Are you looking for a Yamaha like most of Charleston, or are you willing to get a mercury or Suzuki for less?

I was thinking yamaha, but I’d love a Suzuki too. Don’t know if I’d want a Merc…they’re solid for fresh…but salt? Not too sure.

Don’t know why Mercs would be any less effective in salt versus fresh. Their Verado is one of the more popular 4-strokes in the salt.
That said, I wouldn’t trade my Yamaha SHO for anything.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

Probably irrational to think my way, lots of Mercurys in Florida. Yamahas are the preferred motor around here…everybody can work on 'em.

I have two Suzuki motors now, and they are pretty good.
I think my Mercury was a better motor…
I’ve owned Yamaha motors too. Down side- they cost more around here. Up side- they sell for more around here.
I would avoid the Evinrude E-Tech if you’re not servicing it yourself. They are awesome motors, but parts and service are near impossible to get around here.
They’re all the same to me since I do all my own work.
I would talk to Ben at B.A.R. marine in Jacksonboro if you’re willing to accept a mercury, he can probably find you something. The Verado is an awesome motor. He is usually super busy this time of year.
Mercury has one of the best track records on corrosion.
I’ve owned Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude, Yamaha and even owned one Chrysler years ago. I keep coming back to Mercury. Lot’s of folks around Charleston don’t like Mercs but when you ask them why they will admit they never owned one or maybe only owned one and based their entire opinion on one motor. Bottom line is they are all good or they wouldn’t be able to continue in business. Keep an eye on The Hull Truth, lots of motors switch hands on that site.
What size motor are you looking for? What price range are you trying to stay in?
I’m looking for the 115-150hp range. I’ll have to see what I can afford…The Warden put in new carpet and LVT flooring this January…she dropped some serious coin on that stuff. I gotta get a feel for the prices to see if I can squeeze some money out of the bank.

has a good motor shop diagnosed the slow running problem?
hope you’re good, met you years ago at ecfc
I’ve had a bunch of people look at it…a few shops, some come to your house guys, had the carbs rebuilt, had them adjusted.
The motor is good, but I’m tired of it shutting off when I need it the most - at the docks, at ramps and getting on the trailer. I keep getting those looks when I ramp the floating dock because the motor shut off…I’d like to ease up and gently kiss the edge of the dock and then tie off.

If you’re tight on funds, why not just fix what you have? A proper running old carbed 2 stroke will run slow and idle just like any other motor. Probably just needs the carbs tuned correctly, maybe rebuilt. Unless you just want something different just because.
Not sure what year your Johnson 130 is, but I have a 2001 90 V4 and it is crazy reliable, and never shuts off. I have never rebuilt the carbs, but I only run non ethanol, keep the boat in a garage with the tank always full, and I decarb the engine every season. Thing idles smooth, no smoke, and doesn’t shut off. It could be a number of things, but these old V4 motors can run really smooth. Could be the gas you are using, the oil, or just needs a really good cleaning. I only run XD50 oil and the motor runs way better on the premium oil instead regular old dino oil from Wally World. A lot of folks look at these old motors and just say i’m not running premium fuel or spending on premium oil, and I think that is a big mistake. They run better on the good stuff. And the motor always feels like new after a deep de-carb. Heck, it could just be an adjustment on your idle cable or something.
How was the compression on each cylinder? If it has solid compression I bet it could be tuned up to run smooth.
I’ve had a bunch of mechanics look at it…rebuilt the carbs, checked compression(all are good). No one can seem to “dial” this rascal in. She’s been sitting in storage all winter, but the other day, I stuck the foot in half a barrel of water and after a few minutes, she fired up and idled as sweet as a bobcat at 900rpms and never once tried to shut off.
It’s a 1996 Johnson 130 v4 looper. This motor does have a fast hole shot, runs around 40mph…only has issues near docks, landings, tight places where you need it not to have issues. I think it hates me.

I never had anything but 9.9, and 15 Johnson, but whenever I took it out the water I always run it dry by disconnecting the fuel. I put one up for three years and when I let a friend use it it fired on the first pull and purred on the third one. Not bad
