if you were only allowed one fly pattern, what would it be if you were going after tailing redfish?
personally a small weighted crab fly. The spoons work really well, but kinda think of those as cheatin.
Gold DuPree spoonfly.
same as CH allen
If I was stranded on a desert grass flat I would hope I had a spoon fly.
spun deerhair slider/diver (sort of a Dahlberg but not quite).
thanks fellas. hopefully soon i will be posting about my first red on the fly.
i actually have another question. last time i was on the flat i saw a some tailing redfish and along with the tailing reds i saw a tailing sheepshead. how would i go about catching the sheepshead on the fly? crabfly? or is it impossible?
Really, a tailing sheepshead? You could catch him on a crab.
Sheepshead are tough on the fly, but it can be done. Crab flies.
yea, i did not expect it. he was just cruising alongside a red. he was a big boy too, id say at least 5lbs. that would be a nice fight on a fly rod.
Tailing sheepshead will also take a spoon fly if you hit them on the head with it. Don’t know why it works but it does and even when it works it only works about <10% of the time. Never been able to get them to take a crab pattern which is the logical choice.
wabbit of some sort or crab

That could well be a sheepshead but, could it also have been a black drum? You are the one who saw it but, black drum often have the stripes like a sheepshead. I ask because, I have seen reds and blacks in the grass at the same time but, sheeps seem to like to stay out of the grass. Just asking? Black and red drum will probably eat the same thing in the grass and I guess the black would most often hit it just a little slower. If it’s a sheepshead you better set the hook hard! Ty
yea man a sheep will tail i caught this big boy at edisto when i was 16 on my redfish flat with a tiny little shrimp fly, brought him back cause ill let a red go everytime on a flat but the sheep is a different story
but man i dont like spoonflies if the grass is even a little bit thick its hard to get that fly down in front of their face, i dont think you can beat a coppahead with a good weed guard, thats just me though its never done me wrong
no im sure it was a sheepshead. sheeps have more distinct black and white stripes, IMO. also, the way it moved, because i ended up spooking it, was indicative of a sheepshead. it must have been munchin on some fiddlas.
thats a nice sheep colt. i bet it was a great fight.
Coppehead or a grey over white clouser.
I also see sheeps tailing regularly.
