Rallying support for a public Cooper R landing

I’ve had some discussions with a friend George Rigsby who has been trying to find out how we can get our issues with Cooper R access addressed by someone who can do something about it. He has written a letter to the editor of the Post and Courier, he has sent letters to the tri-county delegation and to Mayor Summey, etc with little traction.

In summary, we have a poor access to the Cooper River.
> We lost the North Charleston Fishing Club when the Hess property was sold.
> The nearby public landing (R.M. Hendricks Park) has no dock, is very shallow, and larger boats cannot get under the old train trestle.
> Bushy park is silted in. We all know about that mess.

I’d like to start a petition and get it signed by

> As many CF.com members as possible
> As many local fishing clubs as possible
> As many fishing tackle shop / marinas / boat dealer owners as possible
> As many recreational boaters as possible

And bring it to the tri county delegation, mayor summey, basically anyone who can make this happen. I would think that if basically the entire boating/fishing and related businesses are behind the call for a new public landing for the Cooper that it would send a powerful message, no? Up till now it has been a few concerned individuals.

I would welcome any help on this. We need a letter addressing the problem and the desire for a solution, and then need to take it around to get signatures.

What are your thoughts? This is about as far as I have gotten so far. We just need to get the ball rolling.

Let’s demand action for a public landing!

Good on you Dave! It has always amazed me just how few landings there are that are decent, useable landings in the Charleston area. It blows my mind that the money was spent to build Bushy and now it is virtually unusable.

“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?

I’d be happy to sign it and get the word around to those I know. Maybe getting with the Haddrell’s and Charleston Angler locations for a meet and greet type event where everyone interested could come sign it and support a local business at the same time. Just my opinion.

I ,also, heard about the possibility of the salt water side closing and a new ramp poured on the Island next to Bushy Park. Think it said a bridge would have to be built and land donated from the business that owns it. I will sign any petition regarding this.

Ill sign a petition! I have been wondering with all the money from boat taxes, fishing licenses, commercial licenses so on so forth, that all the public ramps seem so bare. I would think with the amount of money they are bringing in that they could put some fish cleaning stations in and a bathroom at each boat ramp on top of making them usable! Maybe my logic is flawed!

I agree with you 100% but when you start adding things like restrooms and trash receptacles, you have to pay someone to maintain them…which, of course, costs more money. Hell, Remley’s doesn’t even have trash cans at the ramp, let alone restrooms and cleaning stations. Lol!

I don’t fish there often, but I will gladly sign a petition for a new landing.

I’ll be happy to provide you with some man hours whenever needed. North Charleston had a golden opportunity when they re-did the naval base years ago, but opted not too.

Let me know and we will add a link to our newsletter and help get it circulated. We definitely need some more ramps in the area.

Thanks for the comments. I will get working on a draft document and will follow up.

Great job Dave, and a outstanding idea. This will get the ball rolling. We might even overwhelm the politicians when we get the entire low country involved.

I will definitely sign and offer assistance if needed.
23 years ago when I started fishing that area it was a great ramp, such a shame they let it go. My understanding is the main cause of the silting is how the bardges push past washes into the area.
Back in those days they had trash cans and even a large dumpster. That was abused by folks putting household trash there. I have seen everything from couches, grills to parts of car engines. The trash can would be tipped over just a mess. It only takes a few to ruin it for others.
There also used to be a little store over on the freshwater side.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Really appreciate it. It will take some effort to get all the signatures.
I’m flat busy till the end of the month. I will work on a draft document then and will follow up.
Thanks,
-Dave

I am aware Fall Hunting and Fishing season is almost here, but maybe a sign up at the landing. Not sure of the legalities of doing something like that. Surely most of the folks who use the landing would be willing to. ???

On February 6th 2 years ago we lost the property for the North Charleston Fishing club when “Buckeye Oil” would not re-new our lease of fifty years! They stated that it did not make good sense to have a boat ramp in the close proximity to a fuel tank farm. after writing several e-mails to Mayor summey and his council members…they told me that they are trying to get this property for a public boat launch but, it appears to be too polluted and another study is being done. We deserve to have a public access on the cooper river in North Charleston! Not just the mud filled bushy park ramp. I am all in to help!

I’d like to invite you to bring your petition to the next East Cooper Fishing Club meeting, it’ll be the first Monday of the month (Sept) unless that falls on a holiday. If you want to stop in and talk for a few minutes, I’ll get our president to set aside a few minutes for you.

Sounds like a really good idea.

Hmmmm…I just checked the calendar and Sept 7th is Labor Day. I’ve sent a date confirmation to the Board of Directors. I’ll drop back in with a date of our next meeting.
