What is the “average range” or distance most of you guys shoot?
5’,8’,10’? My son is ready to start shooting when he dives and he was just wondering what range of gun would give him the most bang for his buck. Probably start him out on the nearshore reefs in 60 feet shooting at the smaller stuff like triggers, sheeps, spades when they are around. He has a JBL mini-carbine and is looking to buy another gun that’s a little stronger.
I use a Biller 48 and it has pretty good range. Most shots I usually pull the trigger at about 8-9 feet though, I try to close in quick with the Picassos before I take the shot. There are alot of variables, depends on what type of fish you are shooting too. Some fish may be a little spooked so you may only have a 12-15’ shot before they scatter anyway.
Three times the length of the gun or spear. If you notice, most shock cords are only 3 times the length of your spear so if you want a long range you need a longer gun. Accuracy doesn’t matter if there isn’t enough power behind it when the spear gets there. I use a 53" and that seems to work well on most fish up to medium grouper. I have shot a Sheepshead in the skull with a 38" carbine before from 1 foot away and saw the spear bounce off. Aim for the meat.
14’ Pamlico 140 Angler w/ rudder
Kayak, SCUBA, or both.
band size will effect also thicker band means fast spear speeds and great distance
Big Dummy
I can believe that about the sheep. Those things are tough!
I noticed the spears are not the sharpest things around anyway.
I guess I’m used to seeing a Muzzy point. Those spear points need to be sharpened with a chisel point like the Muzzys.
