Never seen this before but while I was out around breach the other day we saw a huge ray come 90% out of the water flying after or away from something. No way to get a pic but was an amazing site. Caught a few flounder and trout too.

Actually it’s not that uncommon. It is rather unsettling to have one do it right next to your boat which I have experienced. If you surf the internet you will see that they are not quite sure why Rays do this, with theories that they are shaking parasites or escaping predators.
I’ve seen this twice before. Once northeast of the jetties and once in the ICW.
By the jetty I was king fishing and the ray was several hundred yards away but looked 10+ wide and jumped about 10 feet out the water. Might sound crazy big but he was a monster that could absolutely sink a boat if he landed on it.
The other was about 60’ away in the ICW and looked about 8’ wide. He came about 5’ out the water.
It may sound crazy but I can assure you they were extremely large and certainly not being chased by predators. I’ve caught 6’+ stingrays and they were nothing compared to the jumping rays.
First, Most, Biggest
I want to catch them all
They actually think now they do it for breeding purposes. He who makes the loudest splash gets the ladies kinda thing.
I think if they are smaller and jump repeatedly, then they are likely being chased by shark(s)
My family witnessed this at Edisto one late August a few years ago. The ray kept jumping and came close to shore. Shortly afterward we saw a large hammerhead in a breaking wave. My kids had left the water only minutes earlier.

" He who makes the biggest splash gets the ladies" if that were the case then I’d be George Clooney - dam, I should have been a ray-maybe in my next life.
