Ready for flounder gigging?

OK…decided to keep J16 and make a flounder gigging boat out of it.

11 LED lights putting out over 21,000 lumens running on 24 volts and pulling 7.5 amps.

Hope to try it out if wind will ever calm down!

Looks great, might be able to compete with the Savannah gigging fleet with the fans on the back of the boats.

Where did you get the lights?..that looks great!

All except two are 27 watt lights from Amazon, Bob…

2 on the front corners are same type but 42 watt…

They are extremely bright…and I am running them at 24 vdc to reduce the current draw. I misquoted amps above. The current draw is actually 13.625 amps on 24 volts. At 12 volts, the current draw is 27.25 amps. With 2 fully charged batteries totaling around 180 amp hours, I calculate 13 hours on a charge. That said, with older batteries, if i can get 4 or 5 hours and run the trolling motor a bit I should be able to gig a full tide roll.

I can’t tell a lot of difference in the 27 and the 42 watt lights. At only $13.04 each for the 27 watts…you can afford to put more lights around the boat for wider spread. 9 lights would only pull around 10 amps at 24 vdc.

nice…

Thanks for the info, what I have on mine is the “domed” work lights using 100w 12 volt bulbs, plus I have a hand held million candle power spot light…I will look into those lights, they have to be better than what I have now, and it’s all about being able to see…will be bringing my boat to the Keys to bully net lobster at night on the flats.

If the blackjack is named Moonpie, the J16 is Moonpie Lite.

That looks great! Im trying to rig my kayak to do the same. The kayak I use is very stable and easily able to stand in. Ive read that Grayco in beaufort has some decent lights which can clip on the side of a kayak easily with a small battery. Hope to try around the May river if the winds lay down over the weekend.

what kind of bow do you use for gigging? i would think you need a pretty heavy draw to penetrate the water very deep.

My aluminum gig handle doesn’t bend enuf to measure an accurate draw weight baracuda!

Very Nice, Jim

Stick em!

How are the lights mounted?

How are the lights mounted?

I loved those Carolina Skiffs for doing anything in skinny water. I had a J14 that I did all of my gigging out of. The only way I could have made it better was add 2 feet to it (J16). Nice looking rig. Stick em!

They are mounted through the rolled over lip of the boat. I drilled for the mount so I could swivel them and for strength in rough water. I have to unbolt one bolt to remove. I’m left with the hole in the rollover, but have some little plastic inserts I can put in when removed.

Nice work.you the man mr. Jim.can’t wait for the reports

How long do you think 4 would last with one deep cycle battery and can you switch sides while on the water? These look awesome and are cheap!

4 would last quite a while on a Group 27 deep cycle.

Interstate’s green top is rated for 27M is rated for 17.5 hours at 5 amps and 4.8 hours at 15 amps (brand new, full charge). 4 lights at 27 watts each equals 108 watts / 12 volts = 9 amps.

Figure around 80 amp-hours / 9 amps = 8.9 hours.

I don’t have mine rigged to switch sides, but have 8 lights around the front and 3 down the starboard side. You could easily mount some Driftmaster bases and switch sides if you wanted to go that way.
