Red Snapper Mini-Season

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that recreational anglers would have a very brief window to get out and target red snapper. This fishery was closed the waters of the South Atlantic to the recreational harvest of red snapper in January of 2010. Now almost 2 years later there will be what amounts to 2 weekends of fishing. One was last weekend and a few people made it out to see if they could catch any and there were some nice red snapper caught. The next opportunity will be this coming weekend. The season will open at 12:01 a.m. on 9/21 and close at 12:01 a.m. On 9/24. There is a limit of one fish per person per day and there is no size limit. If you are planning on fishing this coming weekend, SCDNR has offered to be available at the Marine Resources Center at Fort Johnson during the weekend to sample fish that have been caught. For many that feel the science that has been used to close this fishery is not accurate, to can be a great way for the folks at DNR To help add some science to this process. I’ve included a link to the press release SCDNR has provided for this process. Http://www.dnr.sc.gov/news/yr2012/sept13/sept13_anglers.html
