Fishing with a cajun thunder cork and a live mud minnow, I hooked a 5 lb trout and I fought him for a few minutes. Earlier, a 10lb red had been cruising the mud flat and stayed in the area. Amidst fighting the trout, the redfish came up and slammed the trout, and grabbed it by the head/gill and fought it. After about a minute struggle, the red let go and I landed the trout. It’s gills were damaged, and I attempted to revive it but it died. During the fight, my buddy ran down to see and watched the fight. He threw his rig out and set it in a bush to help with the trout. Then, his rod lurched foward and he fought a big red, only to see it was the redfish that killed my trout. I’ve never seen behavior like it, and have the mangled cajun cork to prove it. Have yall ever seen something like this?
I’ve had one come up from the depths and swallow a 10" +/- trout that was following my grub. I bet that one Red has eaten more trout than I have all year. They can’t be good for the trout population. It was cool to watch though.
that’s crazy man, one of my favorite spring trout patterns is a puppy drum fly but i’ve never heard of a bass tryin to eat a trout, especially an old girl like yours. The two top predators of shallows are havin a turf war it sounds like.
