After I saw rapchizzles post I decided to do my own. I have had an old Jon boat sitting around the house for a while trying to get my father do help me register it. We had an old merc 5 sitting around from a past sailboat so we decided to use that. As some of yall know, my parents just opened a restaurant so that has eaten up a lot of there time. I finally got my dad to do the paperwork on it so now its way to the DNR office in gamecock city. We already sanded down the old paint coat and re-sealed the rivets and primed the hull.We haven’t painted it yet because were unsure if were done with metal work and don’t want to stratch the coat. I snapped a couple of pics today
We also messed around with the motor and it runs but doesn’t “pee” right. Ideas? That’s about the extent of the work for now. But ill keep yall updated on the progress and keep ya answering many questions!

Good for you yak. Good luck with the project and phin has set the bar high on keeping us posted with pics. Let’s see if you can give him a run for it. Looking forward to seeing it complete
Thanks yall. I do hope to build a phin worthy thread! So were going to add a bow platform with anchor locker and a piling platform in it. To keep the weight out of the back, we don’t want to put the gas can behind the back seat and transom. I’m thinking like rapchizzle did… cutting open middle seat and putting in there with the battery versus sitting the tank in the middle of the boat. I’m not sure how the gas lines will connect and stuff though… the battery is definitely going in the middle seat to balance out weight. Comments?

Poling platform seems a little overkill, but what the heck. Go for it.
Battery in middle means you’ll need some pretyy heavy gauge wire - rigged in tubing to protect it. Don’t run wire and fuel lines in same rigging tubes to rear.
Good luck!

Yeah, we were going to tun out battery wires through a small tube. If you see in the picture there is like a ridge on the outside and its a depression inside the boat on each side. We were going to run 1/4" through that wihh all the wires inside that. Just not sure about the gas lines. Our other option is to just sit the gas can down in front of the back seat. That’s ugly and takes up a lot of room. Are there any safety issues with putting it in the seat by leaving a “hole” in the back side of the middle seat so I could slide in and out?

Yakman, you better measure that seat before you go cutting into it! From the pictures it looks like it’s not as wide as the stern seat. Will a gas tank even fit? You can drill a very small hole to see if there is foam in the seats before you go to cutting. Before you do anything, sit back and look at the boat and picture in your head, what you want the finished product to look like and be! Just remember,(Measure Twice, Cut Once)! Visualize before you do something!
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking about fuel. But I may just get a 3 gallon tank and if I’m camping or something just bring extra. Unfortunately I can’t get anything larger. I may save my money for a 10hp that pops up on claist but I would rather run it with a 5 then have it sitting waiting for a 10 in my $ range.
Who is a good trolling motor guy around JI? I have a trolling motor in my shed, that I don’t know anything about and want to get running. I have no idea what needs to get done, I would like to take it to a guy and get an estimate for it.
Also, what is the best place to get rodholders? I really want 2 triple packs, the one that has 3tubes connected together and then 3 single tube rod holder’s for the front. Thanks yall

I did these for my boat out of stuff I had laying around. no store bought rod holders.
I know that you are on a budget, so I’ll be as kind as I can with a cost. Give me a day or two to see what kind of materials I’ve got in the garage and I’ll get back to you.

Happy bob: Do you sell the weld on stainless rodholders or can you give me a good resource of where to look? Don’t need anything expensive because my boat is definitely not that! Thanks

The beauty of that boat is it light weight and accessibility. If you add too much weight, it wont float/fish right, IMHO. I’d skip the rear platform and pole it old school- from the bow. Plus it’d be hard for it to pull double duty as a duck slayer with a platform.
