I know its a basic question but I have been wondering what most use when specifically targeting big reds? I was thinking a fish finder rig with a 4/0 circle hook, 4oz weight all tied with 50lb mono? Best bait? Thanks guys.
i got suprise 1 that was 18lbs easter weekend on a piece of cut mullet with a 3 foot steel leader and i think 7/0 circle hook carolina rigged and intended for sharpnose…but havent gotten another since even targeting the things. normally id use a 50lb spiderwire leader and about a 4/0 circle hook and whatever weight holds it to the bottom.
I like to use 20-30lb. mono flouro leader, it wont be as stiff and will attract reds of all sizes but just my $0.02.

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

I generally use a 2/0 hook with 25-30lb test fluoro leader and a 3oz pyramid is usually enough to hold the bottom. That is usually sufficient for anything you would find in the surf, unless you are targeting sharks. Best bait for reds is usually fresh cut mullet.

got 12 hour days all week but sometime in the future sounds good to me. thinkin bout gettin a fiberglass replica for xmas…i have a couple sets of antlers and a turkey fan on the wall but no fish yet…that needs fixed with either that or a 28" walleye
I was going to use a fish finder rig. Or is carolina rig, bottom rig, high low better? Seems like most everything I catch in the surf is on the carolina rig, but from reading it seems the fish finder is best for targeting big reds.
The rig I was adv of by a wise man, was a fish finder, and about 4 inches of mono with a 5/0 hook I will take a picture of the rig and post it

Thats what I heard too. A picture would be awesome, appreciate it.
Two and a half feet of thirty pound flourocarbon or mono, heavy sinker, a good circle hook attatched by a swivel to powerpro for a mainline and you will be in business. Big reds love fresh cut mullet or big live ones. Fresh cut not frozen, it makes a big difference.
Chicken rigs with two hooks work great for whiting and bluefish but i like the fish finder for big reds and sharks because i can use much heavier leader materials and it wont tangle when it sits on the bottom for a while. Good luck. For the sharks try to use a length of wire at least the length of the shark youre targeting.
