Reef Locations

Hey guys, I’m trying to give back a little from all the kind advice and help I’ve received on this site as I learn how to fish down here. Whenever anybody asks where the popular artificial reefs are located they are always referred to the DNR site which is fine, but absolutely awful as far as graphics are concerned. If you went by that picture you would think the Betsy Ross is right off the beach, but we all know that’s far from accurate. I am a GIS developer, so maps are kind of my forte, unlike catching fish down here =)

Anyway, the extremely detailed maps I was able to make for myself aren’t compatible with any image file because I use a GIS program for it’s creation… however, I was able to layer my maps over a satellite view of the area. I’ve attached that picture below. With my software I’ve also been able to very accurately present mileage to the reefs from what I call “exits” out of the sounds. The blue flags are exits (where you can open the boat back up and head on out) after you navigate the sounds. Also, the real distance from two popular boat landings to those flags are as follows (Note* all miles are in STATUTE miles, not Nautical miles): Pickney Island Bridge to Calibogue Sound Exit Flag on map: 11.6 miles, Lemon Island Bridge to Port Royal Sound Flag on map: 18.9 miles. These distances are measured using satellite and GPS data, not straight lines on a map. This should be almost exactly what to expect in your travels, for they are “as the boat runs” (avoiding points, shoals, etc… instead of just connecting point A to B.

Port Royal Flag to:
Whitewater Reef: 13.59 Miles
Fishamerica: 7.24 Miles
Tire Reef (HH Reef): 12.57 Miles
Eagle’s Nest: 11.83 Miles
Betsy Ross: 12.7 Miles
Beaufort 45: 6.6 Miles
General Gordon: 1.58 Miles
Fripp Island Reef: 12.87 Miles
Hunting Island Reef: 13.8 Miles
R7 Navy Tower: 31.16 Miles

Calibogue Flag To:
Whitewater Reef: 4.63 Miles
Fishamerica Reef: 7.93 Miles
Tire Reef (HH Reef): 13.74 Miles
Eagle’s Nest: 18.46 Miles
Betsy Ross: 23.32 Miles

NN, It was funny how you said “I’m on vacation until Wednesday so I don’t know when I can make it down, maybe Thursday” LOL. Yea man I work all week myself I’m a weekend warrior like most folks.

Lance, No problem dude!

Spanishking, wow. I never even thought about the simplicity and beauty of using Google Maps. I was in my ArcGIS program through a Trimble software then overlayed a satellite image from Google Earth to come up with the reef locations. How much easier would it have been to use Google Maps! LOL. Dang. Oh well, I got the distances and those are important too. Cool image! Are those all your “spots”?

If you go to the “resources” tab and look under “reefs”, you may have saved a lot of typing. But good on ya.
