Reel issue

Hello I am trying to get my back up reel back online, and could use some help. I have no idea what happened to the reel. It is my girlfriends so I am sure it has seen better days, but again it is a cheapy walmart bigwater shakespeare reel.

The issue is that is does not stop when finishing reeling. What I mean by that is that it reels forward, and reels backward. I tried pulling on the line and the drag is not working correctly either. I would rather not pay someone $18 or so to fix it when it is a $20 reel.

I know I get what I pay for, and that is why, my other reel is an okuma, and I love it so far.

Any quick fixes or is it shot?

Sounds like the anti-reverse either isn’t working, or if you have a switch on the reel, it’s positioned so the antireverse is off.

Look for a lever on the reel, and flip it…see if that fixes it. If not, the part to fix it probably costs most of what the reel is worth.

As for the drag, take it apart and grease the disks/washers.

In my experience this is one of the first things to go on an inexpensive reel especially surf fishing. Some last longer than others but on mine when the anti-reverse goes the reel goes in the garbage. I’ve tried a bunch and have had really good luck with quantum optix reels, the 60 and 80 sizes don’t have an anti-reverse shut off switch so one less place for salt and sand to get into the reel. They are inexpensive and have lasted longer than other reels I’ve used. Good luck

It does not have a switch, looks like I will try the quantum.

Can you try taking the reel apart? If you can take it apart, clean it good and try spraying all moving parts with a good quality lubricant. Especially spray the antireverse bearing if it has one. Sometimes a small piece of dirt or sand will cause them to stop working and spraying oil on them a couple of times may start them working again. Also, for future use, rinse all reels well and atleast “spray lube” them after using them in salt water each time.
