Registering a boat

Hey gents,
I have to register my recently purchased boat from a guide in Georgia. He never register the boat in GA, so it is still register from the original owner in FL. I do have the title in hand, trailer title and bill of sale. How difficult is it to register the boat at DNR with the paperwork I have on hand? Any help would be great!

Not very hard, call SCDNR, they will walk you through. I brought a boat from FL back in 06. You will register the boat AND Motor in SC.

It’s not very hard call them on the phone make sure you have all the right paper work… I would suggest making a trip up to Charleston because u will walk out the door with your stickers and titles in hand. I have had really bad experiences waiting for them to come through the mail.

thanks guys, my only concern is the bill of sale is not notarized, is that an issue? NOW that I have paid this guy it’s impossible to get ahold of him. I will have to go to charleston and get it register. Anything else i should bring or need?

Mine wasn’t notarized… Did u take pics of the hull id number and the serial # on the motor? I walked in with all the paperwork I needed and walked out in 5 mins with my title and stickers. You should be fine if u take what they tell you is acceptable.

well i already have the boat and motor, so I think i’m just gonna tow it down there to get it register. 300 bucks for tax is not something fun. Gonna take it to get register next week. Charleston is closest to me. I’m in Beaufort.

This could go a lot of ways. Does it have a motor and do you have the title to it as well? Second is the name on the titles the same as the name on the bill of sale? If not this could be a huge problem. You are doing the right thing by taking everything you have to charleston they are very knowledgeable and helpful. The fact that you are having difficulty getting in touch with the seller is not a good omen. good luck i would love to hear how it goes ill keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help, the Boat came from Fl so the outboard did not have to be register or title. The title has the original owners name on it. On the back he sign it over to the guy i bought it from and then he signed it over to me. This should get pretty interesting.

Just purchased a boat from FL and had to do the same thing make sure you have the MSO for the motor if you don’t have a title for it I had to make 2 trips to Charleston because of that, thankfully I can still contact the guy I bought mine from and they did require my bill of sale to be notorized because it came from out of state.

This is going to suck! Lesson learn from buying a used boat! 1.make sure it is title or has a title. 2. Make sure you look over all the documents. 3. Make sure the owner register the boat.

I can’t register the boat in SC until the guy i bought it from registers it first in GA and then gives me his registration card. In turn then i can take that and register it in SC. I’m about to sell the parts of this boat! This is going to be a pain in the ass!

sorry to hear that. I was afraid it was going to go this way hopefully the guy you bought it from will cooperate. If he won’t can you go back to the guy in florida since his name is probably still on the title of record in that state. just a thought.

Give me a call

thanks for your help Adam. Let’s hope the Charleston office is knows what they are talking about as the Columbia office. The Columbia office stated that as long as i have a title which shows the original owner sold it to him and in turn he sold it to me that should be good.

What is MSO for Motor? Disregard my ignorance!

yo

MSO (Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin) I had know idea what it was until they asked for it in Charleston and I called my guy in FL it took him a few weeks but once I got it in hand it went smooth good luck

Well according to the Columbia office the Charleston Office is clueless! A very nice lady name Kim at the Columbia office stated they CANNOT force anyone from a diffrent state to register their boat. So she told me to send her the title, bill of sale and of course the 350 bucks from me and she will take care of the title and registration! So once again government agencies not coordinating with each other (I should know I work for uncle sam!)
