Hands down the best billfish picture I have is a white that a buddy jumped in the water with and photographed. Much better story than the bronzed out of the water sailfish for your first. Little Big Man Anders has probably even gotten some tail from that photo… and that’s saying a lot.
There is definitely something rotten in the state of South Carolina.
I just cant figure out if its the ole yankee boat captain or if he brought some buddies with him.
Guess we’ll probably never know.
BTW Safari killed a 473.5 lb blue marlin in the Big Rock yesterday. A friend said there were alot of bill fish out there today, look for more marlin getting killed. What you think about that Greg1?
“A second blue marlin was boated on the Ashley Lauren, but that fish did not meet tournament minimums of 400 pounds or 110 inches in lower jaw fork length. The Ashley Lauren will be penalized 400 pounds from the weight of any other blue marlin it brings to the scales.”
Tell us all why Safari killing a blue marlin should upset me.
Just wanted your opinion…I didn’t say you should be upset. I more wanted to know what you thought about the Ashley Lauren killing a undersized fish for money, not because it was their first.
Also, has anyone ever done an actual study regarding the mortality rate of sail fish that have been boated versus sail fish released the IGFA way? If so can someone show us the results. The third sail fish we put in the boat last week had a hook through his eye… He probably died either way. We cannot chose where the hook goes (unless you use the circle hook argument) or what eats it when we are pulling dink ballyhoos for meat fish through a weed line in 600’ of water.
There are thousands of people in third world countries that boat these things and barbecue there a**es to feed their families. Probably the same fish we release here. This is a global issue. I am sure that many first time anglers who boat billfish will eventually get their share of it and realize there are better ways to do it, but your stance on this is fairly extremist… Its like you are related to the fish or something.
We have been joking about catching billfish, gaffing them in the eye, and adding them to menu at Dukes BBQ. Just a joke, but man some of those guys at the 50/50 acted like you just shot there puppy and set their pickup truck on fire.
I am done with this thread… I just hope everyone takes something good from all this… If you catch a sail fish, don’t post your picture on this site, or if you do don’t have your face in the picture.
Congratulations to all who caught their first sail fish this year!
[but your stance on this is fairly extremist… Its like you are related to the fish or something.
My stance is extremist?
Please tell me what my stance is? Tell us what you think you’ve been reading and tell us what you think I’ve been saying.
I know I said I was done but here’s my take on it…
Greg1, yes…extremist. You keep saying you wish people had killed their sail fish and brought it home to eat it. I can not say that I would condone that practice. By dragging hooks through the ocean we are basically endangering the lives of sail fish.
Lets say a sail fish has used up 70% of its energy by the time it has been drug around by a 50 for half an hour. That means the sail fish has about 30% of its energy left. Now we take it out of the water for a quick photo, that is the straw that breaks the camel’s back?
Here’s another stupid argument… Most lures are made from a highly toxic plastic product know as Plastisol. Taken in small doses Plastisol can be lethal. Now they are probably hundreds if not thousands of fish swimming around the ocean with large amounts of Plastisol sitting in there gut, slowly eating away at their insides. A very painful death. How many fish have gotten away from you over the years.
Just about every large, successful private and charter boat in this city boat sail fish for pictures… They just stay off this site because of a**holes like you.
Its all about how you go about it…You say you are trying to educate new fisherman, yet you go on people’s post and give them sh*
I didn’t give Henry Old any grief about his picture. I gave him grief about his selfish atittude and his poor logic.
Same as I gave you.
Offshore fishing used to be a tight night community of people who used to look out for each other and the fishery. Its newbies like you with your selfish, better than anyone else attitude that annoys me.
It’s newbies that give bad advice to other newbies and the endless domino effect of poor fish handling techniques perpetrated by website photos.
All I am doing is educting you guys that removing a fish from the water for a photo (no matter how “special” your fish is to you) is in bad form and should not be encouraged.
Like I said…every Sailfish is special to the person that caught it, but sometimes we need to put the good of the fishery ahead of our selfish desire to be top dogs on the internet for a few hours.
And if you still think I’m just an extremist then perhaps you can read some thoughts from other organizations that know a thing or two about billfish.
NEVER remove the fish from the
water</font id=“red”>. This can result in fatal damage to the fish for two reasons.
Excess rubbing and drying can result in the loss of the protective slime
coat found on the surface of the fish. Without this protective covering,
the fish becomes susceptible to bacterial infections and parasites.
Additionally, the skeleton of a billfish is designed for the buoyant conditions
of the ocean. Removing the fish from the water, even onto the
gunwale of the boat, causes the skeleton to come under the full strain of
gravity, which can damage the skeleton and internal organs.

Logic…
Ok, so I can kill a blue marlin or sail fish as long as its legal, but I cant take a picture of a legal sail fish in the boat. But if I do, I have to have the right attitude?
Makes sense to me…
Something makes me think you live in Mt Pleasant and wear socks with your Tevas. I think someone already said it best, you need to get laid.
The Problem is that even if if everyone on the website promises to never billfish again other countries will still send out small outrigger canoes that catch 120 fish a day to feed the population. They do not care about fish stocks; they just care about making money to feed their family.
I will do everything I can to prmote healthy billfish release but until we get international cooperation our actions will do nothing. As global demand for seafood goes up other countries and their commercial fleets will care less and less about the fish stocks, and it will become harder to stop the downward spiral. I am only fourteen and have been fishing seriosly offshore for six years, but I still want my children to be able to experience the adrenaline rush of catching their first bill.
RUNNOFT, why did you release the fish? Was it so the fish would live? If it was then why not give it the best chance to do so? And why fuss like a baby when a few of us explain a better way to do so. All I asked on your thread was if you really want to call the videos you posted a “perfect release”?
CatSea…yes…we all know international commercial fishermen are the devil…but if you read back a few pages you’ll see that we discussed the ever increasing number of recreational fishermen and that as individuals we should all be as responsible with our resource as we can be.
Much like my anology about breaking a deer’s leg for a picutre then setting it free. It’s just stupid. Either shoot the deer and eat it or do your best to not injury them.
I can’t believe “imponere” got off so easy with the diarrhea coming out of his mouth. Typical Yankee telling everyone how much better it is back up north… Go back up there!!! We sure as hell don’t want you here
hell, i thought all the bleedin’ hearts were out in california sippin’ on man juice. we got a whole forum full of 'em hear.
we fish the cold waters up north, where men got balls and theres none of this summer lovin’ weekend warrior pansy galavantin you call fishin’ here south. rich boys sportin’ your rich toys is all ya are.
Congratulations, you’ve instantly made friends with everyone on this site. Please bless us southern pansy fishermen with some more of your northern wisdom and knowledge. We love that! By the way, your profile states that your hobbies are fishing and passing gas. You sound like a classy guy. Do your knuckles also drag on the ground?
see this attitude gents? This is exactly what I mean. I simply make a statement about where I fished and in what climate and you go crying about north/south issues. You’re a dying breed.
actually your the one who brought up the north south issues when you mentioned the little part about us being pansy liitle rich boys that dont fish the cold waterup north. If you dont like fishin with us pansy liitle rich boys down south then don’t fish here. if you want to fish here then you have to put up with our pansy attitudes. oh and the little part about us being a dying breed- Im still living
greg1 apprciate your efforts to better imform about releasing billfish

Greg1, you are quick to point out that you are a more experieced offshore angler than I, and that may be true, but the people I fish with are some pretty experienced anglers. I keep asking this same question in the offshore community that I know in Charleston and I keep getting the same answer…stay the hell away from this website. You are not making the offshore community any more tight nit. I ultimately do agree with you, but you take it too far. I’d like for you to tell some of the people I fish with to their face about pulling a sail fish into the boat. Chances are I know you or someone you know and this topic will come again, but in the future tone it down little, huh? Lets try yo make the offshore commnutiy tight nit again.
