Restaurant question

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here goes…The wife and I are spending the day in Charleston in a couple of weeks. I figured I’d ask the local guys what is the best seafood restaurant in the area ? We will definitely be dressed very casual, so that may limit our choices. Any recommendations ?

I’m looking forward to these responses. I like Roadside Seafood on James isl. just a small restaurant with fried seafood lol.
If you’re not from the coast you should bring a small empty cooler to tote back a few pounds of shrimp with you.

The Crab Shack on Folly, think they have 1 or 2 other locations in the Charleston area.

Opinions vary, but for my money, I like the Crab Shack…they have the absolute best red rice I’ve ever had. And their seafood isn’t bad either, lol. Not really a fan of the overpriced, overcrowded tourist traps downtown…just my $0.02.

The wreck in Mt pleasant, on shem creek. Small and cozy but the food is awesome

Look at where Jesus went to pick people. He didn’t go to the colleges; he got guys off the fishing docks.

  • Fancy: The Boat House on IOP
  • Semi Fancy: Waters Edge for the whole fried flounder
  • Famous: The Wreck - cash only.....no credit cards
  • Not fancy - Bowens Island serves a great plate of fried whiting
  • Shrimp and Grits - Pages Okra Grill in Mt. Pleasant. They have a decent platter too. Great burgers, good variety of great food. Also best desserts.
  • Steam Pot - The Crab Shack
  • Grouper Sammich and beer while watching paddle boarders: Reds on Shem Creek.
  • Family Friendly: Gilligan's (great hush puppies)

Thanks guys…this is exactly what I was looking for. We’re not looking for the big, expensive, crowded tourist traps…we’re looking for where the locals eat.

    Nice list there and agree!

I’d also recommend Swig and Swine on Savannah Highway for some of the best BBQ. Be sure to get some of the pork belly. OMG.

If you want to be like the rest of the tourists, go to hymans.

For reel though, I dig this place:

    Sit outside and it’s casual.

    Don’t go to hymans.

23 I have been to Tavern and Table for lunch a few times and enjoyed my food as well. The grilled cheese short rib sandwich is quite tasty. Good food, good atmosphere and don’t need to get dressed up. A win win. Also a fan of Coda del Pesce on Iop which means “Tail of the Fish” and find the food at The Obstinate Daughter is delicious.

This is a good list including links with web address and phone numbers.

Some got to win, some got to lose…

Good listoverall, been to a majority of these, but can count at least 5 on the list I wouldn’t rush back to.

Yes is a pretty good list, especially like to see the Glass Onion:smiley: #3 Wild Olive has a excellent charcuterie platter and solid food. Not trying to bad mouth but a couple weeks ago 2 out of 4 entrees were pastas and needed love in a bad way. Everything else was great. Loved the Veal Marsala. #8 Charleston Grill is veeerry expensive, but also veerery good. Fig is a “great” restaurant and coming in at #10 makes no sense to me. One of the best and can hold it’s own nation wide. #18 enjoyed my meal at the Grocery. #21 Trattoria Lucca is also putting out some of the best food in Charleston-should be rated allot better. He is the only chef that I know of to ever hit 5 stars/5 diamonds in Charleston and being #21 is highway robbery. #30 Tattooed Moose love the duck club samich. # 31 Edmunds Oast eaten twice and enjoyed it. The shrimp and pickled vegetable toast is killer and the fried chicken with serrano honey-yum. Crazy good beer. Coming in at #38 the Obstinate Daughter this I believe is very good food. Tried it 4-5x with enjoying everything. From the pancetta and egg pizza, beet and fresh ricotta salad, to braised short ribs with gnocchi. Don’t know why it is so far on list. A couple I don’t agree with, but not going there. Patrick at Langdons does a great job, best tuna around, foie gras what’s not to love. He should be on that list before many others. A quality restaurant is not hard to find in the Low Country. The old saying “I have eaten all across the world” applies here. Some of our restaurants have no problem going toe to toe in a global arena. We are blessed to live where we do with unparalleled deep rooted history and some of the best chefs in the Nation. Charleston S.C. Bo!

The Glass Onion…yummy . If we are talking “Charleston”, Coast, Hanks, 82 Queen…exellent She Crab soup, Fleet Landing…great Crab Cakes, Anson…lots of choices.

Dont think they are ranking them by number, looks like by area if you look at the map.

x2 on 82 Queen and Glass Onion. 82 Queen is one of my all time favorites anywhere.

That would make more sense then. No wonder I was confused. Thank you.

Low Country Bistro which is a sister restaurant to 82 Queens and is on market street. Very nice lunches and great prices…

Best fried seafood in Chucktown hands down is Dave’s carryout. Terry can put a serious arse whoopin on some fried seafood…

T&T is good for apps, drinks, and people watching, it's a tourist trap, trust me.

23 says you only need 20 baits for a day of fishing.
